Traveling from Hawaii to Raleigh NC for a couple weeks in June

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Traveling from Hawaii to Raleigh NC for a couple weeks in June

Should I try to ship my bike, rent one, or bring mine on the plane? I looked into renting one in Raleigh, and it's about $250 a week. I can't justify spending that much money, but I really don't want to lose 2 weeks of training. Currently riding about 200 miles per week.

Any advice is really appreciated.

Do you have a good travel box for your bike? They ain't cheap. No, I don't think taking your bike as luggage in a standard cardboard bike box is a good idea. It's way too likely to end badly for your bike.

And your airline might well charge quite a bit for you to take your bike as luggage too.

I brought a bike over to Maui last fall, in a cardboard bike box with all my gear inside on United, cost $100 one way. I don't think you'll save much if you have to pay both ways unless you have a coupled bike that can be standard baggage so figure $200. I don't know what other airlines that fly overseas charge but don't think you'll find it for much less. You would have your own bike though.

Ride your bike to Raleigh instead of flying.

I guess first I'll need to find out what the fee is going to be to fly with my bike, but with so many reports of TSA vandalized people's property, it seems like a gamble. I'm going to start keeping my eye on craigslist now. Worst case scenario, I'll have a chance to work on my running for a couple of weeks. Ugh, blasphemy.

I'd be careful to make sure the derailleur doesn't get bent and have it checked at a local shop when you get there.

When I brought mine I got the box from my lbs which still had the plastic protectors for the derailleur and various other parts. I stuffed clothes and sheets and foam pieces. Maybe I had good luck as well, it come through just fine.

Well, there's a change.....someone going from Hawaii to the mainland!

I'd rent a bike before dragging it with me. So many flights, lots of opportunities for damage. With all of the headache of dealing with TSA, packing and everything else, rent a bike for one week, train then take a recovery week.

I took my bike from NC to CO last year and was very surprised at the cost so check it in advance. I bought a good travel case from Craigslist for $150 and since I have lots of frequent flier miles on US Air figured that they wouldn't charge too much (they don't hit me up for checked luggage). Well got to the airport, no break from US Air for my status and it cost $200 to check the travel case each way. The only consolation was when I got back to NC I sold the travel case for $175 and made $25 bucks. Also you have to make sure that at the destination you rent a vehicle large enough to hold the travel case.

I suggest you find a bike to rent. $250 isn't too bad really.
