Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I could have gone 3 or 4 with what I had. The dry bag under the seatbag is 2.5L, and I have a 5L that will mount on the handlebar. For the week long trip, that was going to hold more insulation layers, and another shirt.

@RollCNY, I love the gorge and am glad you went. Very beautiful and those low stone walls along the road remind me of the Taconic State Pkwy, or at least how I remember it from my childhood.

I also love the pics with the fields and rolling hills, the ones after the boat pics. I like how there are bits of green poking out in the fields while the trees are still bare, how you know in a month it will be all leafy and lush.

The thing going on out on the lake is a dinghy race of some sort. The boats do all seem willy-nilly to me, maybe it was a long race and the boats got strung out or maybe it's early in the season and everyone's out of practice, lol.

Nice NY shots, Roll. You're right about it being a great state. I'm also glad you got something of a journeying type ride in, even if it was less than you had planned.

That's epic that you remember the Taconic from childhood. Even though that was just 5 or 6 years ago, still that road must have made quite an impression. It can do that. There's a lot of people that won't ride it.

They've tamed the worst sections considerably now, but when I first drove it in the 70s it was simply terrifying. Then I wound up driving that road back and forth to work for 15 years. It's now my preferred way to get to the city.

Lol, my Dad did the driving. I just sat in the back and looked out the window. It wasn't at all terrifying from my perspective.

@BillyD, so is it still the same, with the low stone walls and green grassy median and the crazy cross-traffic and the deer & woodchucks on the side of the road? That's how I remember it.

2 flat pieces of machined metal the size of the bearing, and a hole through the center. A threaded rod, or long bolt, and you pull them in.

Yeah pretty much all that's the same, except they took most of those crossroads out. And somehow the deer don't seem as bad as they once were on that road. They straightened the worst S-curves, and widened the worst narrow spots, but it still intimates the poor drivers, which works in our favor.

I have a similar approach to hub bearings with my bikes. Only using the axle and two washers on each side and using the axle nuts to pull them in.

...then you beat on them with a hammer, to make sure they will need replacement soon.

And the long ride home

Left Geneseo at 11:16 am, thinking there was no way I would make it home before dark. Thank goodness for gale force tail winds.

103.9 miles, 5:36 riding time, 3868 ft of climing. I hit the 50 mile mark in 2:30, but then lost the direct tail wind.

I stopped and got a banana split a mile from my house, and still got home before 6:30 pm.
