Buying a 2000 Lemond Zurich - any concerns?

So, I have my eye on getting a used 2000 Lemond Zurich, and being somewhat of a newbie and not the most knowledgeable on these things, I'd appreciate any advice. I'm mainly wondering what I should look out for, and if there are any points of caution or things that might need replacing soon. I'd be using the bike for long-ish rides for the fun of it, not for any kind of racing, and I like what I've read about its combo of riding comfort with still good performance.

I haven't seen the bike yet, but it's said to be in great condition and looks nice in photos, and is said to have ~5000 miles in its current form (maybe the frame and fork have more?). It's not stock, and was built from the frame and fork (853 steel frame and carbon fork). It has all dura ace components (9-speed, so 10+ years old I'm guessing?) and Mavic Ksyrium wheelset.

With this amount of use (and assuming no obvious or visible damage), might I have to consider needing to replace any components soon? I don't really need the bit of saved weight from dura ace parts, but I do imagine replacing a worn component would get pricey. The original stock version of this bike was all ultegra.

Also, I've read that the old carbon forks from this era might be wise to replace, just based on material lifespan and use. I don't want to land on my face while riding one day. What would something like that likely cost?

And without my saying the asking price, and assuming it fits me well, what do you think is a fair price for this bike with these components? The all-stock version seems to sell pretty reliably in the ~$500 region.

Agreed on the fit. The rest is true for those with no budget to worry about, but for those who do have tighter limits, a few "what might it cost me?" guidelines can be pretty helpful.

Also, someone who knows these bikes could hopefully advise on "make sure that ____ isn't worn, or check the _____ for ____, etc."

Okay, so should I assume you know it fits. I guess I should assume you know regular wear items are tires, chain, cassette, hubs and bottom bracket for a whichever D/A you have that did not come with the bike, but added at a later time... My point in the previous post is, if you don't regular wear items on a bike, you dont know what size bike you need.

I've ridden and maintained my own bikes for 20 years. I recently bought a used track bike(1st track bike) and put 300 bucks in tires, glue, valve extenders, saddle, lugnuts and pedals into the bike. I thought I had a rideable lightly used bike.... BUT IT FITS... I know bikes and cant well used up vs gently used but i know when a bike fits.

True, there can be tons of variability and surprises waiting. I'm just wondering as a general guideline from those who might know this bike and these components, if after 5000 miles of (average) riding, whether the lifespan of _____ component suggests it's probably on its last legs, of if I likely (hopefully) have another 5000+ miles in it. Like, what if anything is likely to fail on me soon with this usage (assuming newer tires and chain at least)? I'm just not familiar enough to know how long these things last (if hopefully not abused). Obviously, if when I see it and ride it, I find rubs or cracks or things are not quite working right, then that can tell me a bit right there.

As for the overall price, maybe a better question is this... at what price would you brag to your buddies about the great deal you got, and at what price would you be embarrassed to tell them how you got taken?

I bought a 2000 Zurich last November, very nice bike, right sti didn't work. Tried to fix by flushing with wd40, finally replaced with new. That would be my major concern after all that bike is 14 years old.
Mine was all Ultegra, with Rolf wheels, all original.
It is a great riding bike, have put 1900 miles on it so far.
You won't be sorry buying a Zurich!

I got it so cheap the guy almost gave it to me.

Well, I got to take a look today, and in accordance with the surprisingly prescient comment above... it didn't fit.

I took it for a 10 min test ride, and my hands and wrists were already numb and tingly, and my neck was hurting. I just felt way too stretched out and reaching. I normally fit well on a 56cm, and this Lemond was a 55cm frame, and I've had an older 54cm bike that made me feel way too scrunched. But I guess they weren't kidding with the Lemonds having a proportionally longer top tube than usual.

The ride and feel of the bike was beautifully smooth though, and it's super light. But the shifters definitely had some wear and weren't working the greatest. Well, I guess the search continues, and I'll keep my eyes open for a 53cm Zurich, since these seem like great bikes.

Lemond bikes have really long top tubes. I had a '99. I loved the 853 tubeset. The only issues with those bikes is the rear wheel would come out of the dropouts ever now and then. It was a common problem. It happened to me 2 or 3 times.

My Versaille and Etape are 53cm my Zurich is 57cm, I compensated by replacing the setback seat post and much shorter stem. I still have acceptable clearance over the top tube. I can always work around a couple of centimeters.
Maybe that's just me, my bikes range from 53 to 58.

I was looking at a few Lemonds. Check the geometry charts and you'll see that a 55 is really like a 57 because the effective top tube is longer. I ride 54/55 in most road bikes and I was looking at 53 lemond

sorry it did not work out. Fit is key the rest can be repaired and replaced at any budget. Lemonds are actually awesome frames.

edit:
unless you strip out your BB threads or crack an aluminium frame. Those are almost impossible to fix.

Great frame i own one as well Dura ace thing rides great on 28's. Smoove .........
