Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelset Advice, Budget $300

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but let's beat it to death further for 2014's sake.

Goal: sub 1700g wheelset

Currently thinking Vuelta Corsa Lites
Any others out there I should consider before pulling the trigger?

You can get a pair of Performance "Forte Titan" wheels for $170 and I believe their weight is around 1700ish. Very good return policy if you live near one of their stores.

They are not the lightest but I have a pair and their value/price ratio is quite good.

But I would spend a little more and get Zondas with better bearings.

Those Fulcrum's look durable and the Titans look really good value. Campy's are grown people business .

Considered DT Swiss 440 rims and building up what I had left after crashing yesterday but the math didn't pencil.

Going the Fulcrum route, hoping for sturdiness over weight on this variation. Merlincycles.com had them at 267 bucks shipped. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Performance has Reynolds solitude's 31mm deep and 1633 grams for $399 but they have coupons and sales almost every week. They look nice for the money!

Your doubt is valid, weight slipped down on the priority list below reliable after recent reality check with gravity.
Vuelta Corsa Lites are still an awesome deal, no two ways about it.

If going Fulcrum Racing 5, make sure you get the 2014 model which has weight now in the 16xx's. Also if a Shimano guy...or even Campy 11s, the 2014 is 11s compatible. I bought the new 11s Racing 5 from Ribble about a month ago for upcoming DA 9000 build.

Top tip Campag, I went with the 2014 model. Anyone know the spacer size needed to fit a 7 speed cassette to an 11 speed wheel?

My Roubaix came with Fulcrum Racing...... 3's? Now I'm forgetting, dammit. It's an Expert model... anyway, they've been great so far. Still true after ~1000 miles, and I'm a Clyde. Also, I dunno how to seperate out what is due to the 6800 brakes and what is the wheel's braking track... but braking is excellent, with great modulation.

Watch Nashbar for Vuelta super corsa lite, you can get them for 300 sometimes. They are 1500 grams, mine were 1475 when I weighed them without skewers. Been riding them for two years and I weigh 230 lbs without an issue, not even a wheel truing.

I got a set of Aeromax's from Crosslake on ebay for <$70 (including shipping!) and have put ~1500 miles on them. Still perfect. I think they're basically generic Vuelta Corsas...

They usually list around 250.00 and sometimes you can get free shipping or 20% off steals. Just a bit of patience and the 200.00 makes it downright hard to ignore. The skewers are nice, too. Glad you enjoy yours!

These ones, were called Super Corsa Lites at one time. They are on sale right now, but you can get the 1575 gms one even cheaper than that right now.

That is a big "had". Although $267 happens to be what they have the Racing 5 for now. Or $211 if you don't mind the older, heavier version. But shipping is extra.
