Amount of float between pedals?
I am looking at some of the shimano spd pedals out there for mountain mainly, and I am going to use them on one of my road bikes, and need some technical advice. I can't find any numbers of how much float the shimano pedals have. I saw in performance bike that they 're supposed to have 8* of float or something of that nature. On the shimano site, they have no number. Can anybody tell me for sure how much the m959 or something of that nature has. I am not going to get those, but want something similar. I prefer a lot of float, and don't want to spend a lot of money. Wellgo is not out, but leaning toward the shimano. thanks

Define "a lot." How much you need depends on your own bio-mechanics. SPDs usually have 6°, while SPeedplays have either 15-20° or virtually unlimited, depending on model. If you want MTB style pedals, with a recessed cleat, SPDs, Frogs, etc. are your only solutions, and they tend to have less than the better road models like the SPeedplay X and Zero, Bebops, or even the LOOKs that have 9°.

It's inherent to the design that SPD's can't have a lot of float. With that said, I gave my friend a pair of M959's as a housing warming gift and he loves them. One of the things he raved about was the amount of float they had. My Performance brand SPD pedals on my mountain bike have barely any float but since I don't ride that bike all that much I'm ok with it. For the road, I use SPD-SL's and like the 6 degrees of float they offer. They are decent to walk in too.
