Advice on what to buy: 2011 Cannondale CAAD8 tiagra vs 2004 Trek 5200
I've always loved to ride but this will be my first road bike. i've been riding a hybrid and a fixie but signed up for a tri this fall and want to spend more of my time biking. Both bikes are in very good condition and have no additional mods/changes in hardware.
2011 CAAD8 comes with tiagra components ~$500.
2004 5200 comes with ultegra components ~$700.
I would like to keep this bike for a long time and only upgrade components if necessary. Any thoughts?

Given the choices you listed I might consider spending slightly more to buy a new bike. My thinking is why buy a 10 year old Trek when you could buy a 2013-2014 model Allez, Caad8, Trek 1.2/1.5, or even a Fuji or GT from performance and upgrade as needed!

You could buy a brand new aluminum bike with Tiagra components from bikes direct for $500. I wouldn't buy either of those bikes for that kind of money.
