Overwhelmed at What Shorts to Get

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

To me, shorts are like shoes and helmets, what works for you will depend on fit. I started out buying cheap shorts, then sprang for a pair of Giordana mid level I got for less than half price. I was sold. Then I got a pair of bibs for less than half price. Now the shorts only get worn on the trainer.

You might try the Performance Elite shorts as opposed to the club. I have two pair and they are very comfortable.

I like Pearl, Cannondale, Garneau. They all are comfy for me. I tried Nashbar - meh. Zimco on Ebay was pretty good for less dough. Seat is critical. My favorite is a specialized gelwith a central cut-out I found for $10.00 at a swap meat. I am 57 and need a gel seat with a cut-out in the center. As others have already said, try lots of stuff and find what works.

I'm liking the Voler Caliber right now. Good pad, nice feel, reasonable price.

Don't think you should be trying bike shorts on with nothing on underneath. You can determine fit wearing underwear but when you ride with them you don't want to be wearing anything underneath.

A big plus one on nothing under the shorts. Then report back.

Not an odd question. I was just wondering the same thing, then got to the bottom of the thread and saw your question.

No. Bike shops don't usually have a washing machine and a maid. Just like swimwear - barrier when trying on, no barrier when using.

One benefit to Performance is their easy return policy. You can buy something you think will work but if after riding in it (the only real way to assess fit) you find they don't fit you can return. I have no idea what happens to returned cycling shorts though. I don't think I would be inclined to buy them.

What are you supposed to wear when you try underwear on?

This.

Newbs often get shorts...1 pair...then find the glory of bibs and never look back. When I first started riding, I bought a pair of Pearl I shorts...then switched to Castelli bibs. Perfection, I will NEVER wear shorts again.

Can you? I thought buying underwear was a leap of faith.

You were lucky. I had zymphad syndrome when I started so I bought a couple pairs of baggy shorts. Then I took the leaf [sic] of faith and tried regular shorts and bought a few of those. Finally I tried bibs and saw the light. Wasted a lot of money...

No ... you try shorts on while wearing underwear. They don't wash the shorts. Clothing shops in general don't wash the clothing after people try it on.

I, for one, like the simplicity of shorts and I am not a newb. To me bibs are uncomfortable and inconveninent and feel like too much of a production just to ride a bike.

I can't help but feel you take a bit of offense at what I said...

There's always exceptions to the rule but for the most part, nearly every cyclist I personally know has switched to bibs once they find out how comfortable they are...

I have a pair of bibs but I much prefer regular shorts. I guess I have never had the right pair because the ones I have always seem to hot on a hot day.

No problem. To me bibs just entailed a lot of unnecessary hassle- especially on cold days when you have to practically undress just to use the facilities.

Just go in the bibs. You're wearing a diaper anyway. Right @zymphad?

Not a fan of bibs since I prefer the ease of on/off with shorts. Have tried many shorts and now wear Sugoi Pulsar Shorts - Shorts on regular 60, 80+ mile rides with the guys and when on aeros for 80 to 110+ for Ironman training I use the Ironman Logo Sugois. I am 135/140lb with 32 waist and prefer Lg size. Both are without drawstring, they are easy on/off + tight on legs for compression.

That sizing sounds bizarre. I'm about the same size as you and take a small or medium in every brand of cycling shorts I have ever owned.
