Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

European cycling shirts suck and I stopped wearing them 20 years ago.

Just came from Walmart where I bought five $3 tee shirts that are bright lime green and every bit as visible as any $70 cycling shirt. I have always hated cycling shirts with their overrated wicking material and tight fit that makes you feel like you're wrapped like a sausage. By the way I'm not a weekend cyclist and I am not slow. I can average 20mph easily on a 40 mile ride on a relatively flat surface. If I need pockets in the back my wife sews them for me which raises the price to about $6. I slide a rubber band around the sleeves about a quarter inch from the edge and fold the rest over the band If I don't like them flapping in the wind. Cycling shirts are an absolute waste of money.

This should be quite entertaining while it lasts... are you opposed to aero and having shirt pockets? Maybe you're just too fat for the sport? You mention feeling like a sausage in a jersey.. is why I mentioned that, as I've never had that particular problem.

you can get cheap cycling shirts these days. it is mainstream enough now that they stock them in sporting goods shops and regular supermarkets. I have recently been wearing such cheapo shirts that came to about £10 each and they are very nice and have 3 pockets and a ziped inner compartment. perfect. i got them in lime greeen and bright orange.

i have. but it really isn't a problem because the fabric is so elastic, it doesn't restrict movement like normal clothes would if tight. anyway, you can just buy a bigger size.

Interesting.. I always notice the tension at first and then eventually it just becomes part of my skin if I were to describe the feel. I'm more interested in the OP expanding upon his thoughts... perhaps in a way we can all come to understand his view from.

i haven't quite got that far yet. i do carry a normal shorts rolled up to wear over the cycling shorts if I intend to walk about in a populated area where I might scare children and animals.

I am also curious to hear your thoughts on cycling shorts. My legs felt more like sausages in cycling bibs than my upper half has ever in a jersey - and I wear race cut stuff.

P.S. Have you considered American made jerseys? You specifically mention European Shirts. Pearl iZUMi might be worth a shot.

I wear bib shorts and I spend big bucks on them. I'm not cheap it's just that cycling shirts feel to restrictive to me and I don't need to impress anyone. I'm riding a bike, not going to a fashion show.

My problem was I could never get the rubber bands to match my cheap shirts so I reverted back to cycling jerseys.

Could you post a picture, both front and back? Don't forget to include a shot of the sleeves and rubber bands. I'm sure that will be very convincing. Were you trying to be a trend setter, or does it just seem to be happening by accident?

Have you considered a larger size? I don't know if that technique has been well proved yet. But from what I hear it is a rather novel yet very effective cure for clothing being too tight.

Why are you here in a road cycling forum, crying about a cycling jersey? Did your jersey burst into flames? If you dont like them dont buy them. Pretty simple.

Let me put this another way.
wut?

Unhappy is probably the key word. Most of them likely ride off the back in a group and get their jollies by donning spiffy cycling jerseys and giving the rest of us a bad name by riding poorly and pissing off motorists.

The fat bit was actually a joke.. but you're spot on that haters are gonna hate.

Despite the tongue in cheek in my first response I'm still fairly baffled by your personal choice, I find when I wear a shirt like what you've described it turns into a wet hot mess and it doesn't breathe well at all. When I wear a jersey it becomes almost part of my skin and other than super hot days it doesn't turn into a hot mess like a T will. You say you stopped wearing euro style ones 20 years ago, what was the last one made of?
