How much better are Disks than Caliper breaks?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And if they are... should you, all that ride in packs with old school brakes, be weary of how much break can be grabbed with the new stuff?

So is there a huge amount of caution that one would extend in the face of riding behind a bike so equipped? I give caution no matter what but, is the applied caution need to be extensive?

Counterintuitively, you don't need to give disc brakes as much caution as caliper brakes. They're superior in terms of modulation/feel, not necessarily power. Braking power isn't really a concern with modern brakes.

I'm less concerned about the equipment than I am about the rider wielding it.

Last night my wife bought me a copy a Road Bike Action and while reading it I couldn't stop thinking about how much it reminded me of ladies' fashion magazines, with all of the equivalents of $400 shoes, $650 sweaters, $5000 dresses. RBK loves disc brakes - what more do you need to know?
