Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sprint vs Superbe ratchet shifters

Is the Superbe any better functionally, or is it the difference in finish only?

Bikes: An old orange one for dirt, and for the other stuff: a white one, a kinda mint green one, and a black one.

Seems like a question for Classic and Vintage.

Having used both, I'd say the Superbe are actually better. Compare Superbe to DuraAce, and Sprint to 600.

Ratchet shifters? Is that indexed down tube shifters or regular friction shift?

Neither. There is a ratchet mechanism on the friction plates so they only work one way. Makes for better feel and lighter operation. They can be set to either index or non-index mode.

Oh. Thanks for the response. Never heard of them being called ratchet shifters before now. Makes sense though when I think about it.

If you want the BEST FRICTION LEVERS ever made for downtube mounting, find these Simplex shifters and buy them The Retrogrouch: Retro Friction - Part One

Yup. You get friction in the direction which works against the derailleur spring. So the derailleur works to make the shifting lighter in the friction plate direction, and you're only opposing the spring in the ratcheting direction.

And it just plain sounds cool.

They can be set to either index or non-index mode.
Which ones?

The Shimano bar-ends that I've used that support both don't use a ratchet for friction mode, although it's not a simple friction plate either (it feels like it has micro-notches in both directions). I have an indexed SunTour Accushift barcon that supports a "friction mode", but the friction mode is actually just an indexed mode with a friction plate to allow trimming within each gear.

I've never used any explicitly Superbe or Sprint-branded shifters before, though.

Superbe Pro can be switched from index to friction.
