Are my cycling shorts too tight?

Hey guys I just picked up some sugoi road bike shorts at $100. I'm 6'3" and I weigh 190. I take a size 34 waist in pants. I tried on the size M in some sugoi shorts. They were basically tight like wearing spandex, but didn't feel constricted in anyway and they looked stretched in appearance from looking at the front and the back. The waist was not cutting into my gut or sides like if it was stretched too the limit. I tried the Large and the waist was fine but for the legs there was an opening between the shorts and the leg, like a small gap (fit a finger in there), so they were not tight to the skin (I'm talking about the opening of the bottom of the shorts). My question is, the medium felt snug but are they supposed to be like spandex? The girl at the store said that they legs of the shorts should be tight to your legs. Maybe I'm not used to wearing tight shorts but how do you know if they fit or if they are too small. Again the employee said the medium fit better. What's your experience. Also I picked up a jersey (L). It fits great but my wife is wondering if it is too short in the length. The guy measured me at a bike shop around the chest and ordered me the large. There was none in stock. Its a specialized brand jersey at $75 but from pictures I've seen jerseys usually are higher and not lower than the hip, is that right? So basically the bottom of the jersey sits at my hip bone with the back a little longer. Can I please get your feed back on the shorts and the jersey. Thanks guys!!! I can see why you guys wear the tights though. It goes with the look and feel of the bike! :)

I'm 5'10 at 163lbs and I wear a large bib. It sounds to me like you might have really really skinny thighs? I can't really imagine a medium fitting you as I would have recommended an XL based on your height/weight. You are correct, they should be tight all around meaning you shouldn't have any scrunched up or looseness.

My recommendation is to try on a different brand. As for the jersey, it should be fitted/tight all around and it should sit low enough where if you were to raise your arms up your belly wouldn't be exposed. It also varies depending on brand.

I'm 6'3", ~235 pounds, and have two pairs of Louis garneau bibs. One pair are XL and the others are XXL. The smaller ones definitely compress more, but, my bits stay in place better than they do in the larger sized ones. I'm also very broad across the shoulders and chest, so I wear XXL jerseys and jackets.

It's really hard to compare sizes from person to person and brand to brand. Heck, sometimes sizing changes from season to season with some manufacturers. *cough* Hincapie *cough*

But generally speaking, shorts should be snug and jerseys should be long enough to cover the belly button.

uh yeah. And then there's how long the jersey is in back. And how high the hem of the shorts sit back there. Particularly if you ride in an aero position. Ever see those billboards about plumber's butt?

Sounds like "does this saddle make my butt look big?"

I'm 5'6", 150, and medium fits me perfectly in any brand I've tried.

Here I am trying on the new cycle clothing.

Yes your shorts should be snug. Just make sure they're not so tight that your boys hurt/go numb. If the mediums are too tight and the large is too big try a different brand.

FWIW I'm about the same proportions as you 6'2", 190 lbs (even down the the skinny legs) and I take at least a large in most brands and sometimes an XL.

I would also advise not to buy jerseys without tryin them on, especially being tall but not particularly wide. Finding a good combination of length with proper shoulder width can be difficult with our proportions but there is stuff out there. Make sure to get jerseys with silicone grippers along the bottom hem so they don't ride up.

Are you comfortable? If yes...done! If not...try again! And why are you wearing wool sweats under the shorts?

If they are Spandex then they are too tight.

Jersey looks a bit big. Looks like it would flap around. Ymmv
