Getting a new Felt Z85 as my first road bike!

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Getting a new Felt Z85 as my first road bike!

But all I have is a helmet. What should my first accessories be? Thanks!

I already spent most of my budget on the bike itself, and I think I'm still too new for clip-in pedals. So with those caveats...

Personally, I wouldn't worry about anything other than water bottles, cages, a basic computer to track mileage and a saddle bag. Plenty of people don't use bib shorts and are happy as clams nonetheless. There's certainly nothing wrong with bibs, particularly if you're carrying a bit of a stomach, but they're not a necessity out of the gate by any stretch.

Clipless pedals will deliver far more benefit for you than a pair of bibs. You can get Shimano PDs (SPDs) for around $50 a pair. Shoes may run you a bit more than that, but not much. Have fun!

water bottles
padded shorts (don't scrimp here, but you don't have to break the bank, either... I've had luck with these: Novara Strada Road Bike Shorts - Men's - Free Shipping at REI.com)
a jersey with pockets on the back (and enough length to avoid carpenter-cracking the world)
under-saddle bag for holding spare tubes, patch kit, basic multi-tool, etc.

then for round 2 of accessory buying:
chamois creme
more jersies
more shorts
bibs
clipless pedals and shoes

but seriously, don't ride further than you can walk home from until you have spare tube, tire lever and a way to inflate your tire. Patch kit is nice but it won't help you on the side of the road because it takes about 24 hours for a patched tire to cure

Padded cycling shorts, gloves. Patch kit and other stuff for a seat pack. Frame pump. Water bottles. Toe clips. I think those are all needed. For $30 you can get a basic computer for fun. There are probably apps for smartphones if you prefer. Then go ride. The Z85 is a great bike and should provide you with many years of smile!

I'd just worry about safety. Helmet, lights (rear and front), and a saddle bag with spare tubes, CO2 cartridges etc. And then just cycle, forget all the other stuff until you are ready for it or want to, they are not necessary.

Making a post like this without a picture is a ban-able offense.

Agreed.

My first road bike was a Z85. Should have never sold that bike..... Enjoy the wheels off of it.

As mentioned above, you really don't need much besides basic safety and repair stuff. Have fun.

I would buy a Campagnolo Record group and a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate wheels with tubular tires.

Just wondering, did you test ride the Felt Z85 against the Trek Domane 2.3? I am shopping for my first road bike too and right now, the Felt Z85 and a 2013 Trek Domane 2.3 are on the top of my list. I was able to test ride the Trek Domane 2.3 and it was pretty good. The local bike shop didn't have a Z85 for me to test ride though.

Uh..... no. Patch kit will absolutely help you, and you can inflate minutes after patching a tube.

Done it "several" times on bikes, and like a kazillion times on car tires back in the day.

It may be true that full cure takes 24 hours and that some lab metric shows this. But saying a patch kit won't help you on the side of the road is nonsense.
