Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

should I buy? 12 year old Trek 5200

Just test rode a very nice 2002 Trek 5200 USPS edition:

2002 Trek 5200 - BikePedia

Seller is asking $1250. Bike is in excellent condition and everything is still stock Ultegra. Only thing changed is upgraded Specialized seat and seller is throwing in Ultegra SPD-SL pedals (used). Everything felt great when test-riding it; my only concern is that it is 12 years old. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Sounds too high to me. I sold my 5900 for $1300 a few years ago. I wouldn't offer more than $700-800 and that is if it's near perfect and it's a bike you've wanted for a long time.

Price is a bit ridiculous unless you need to have the frame that lance rode.

I sold my Y2K 5200 a couple of years ago for $500. Of course it had over 50K miles on it; some scratches and decals peeling; plus was a Frankenbike with various parts. However it was still very rid-able, but I wanted something newer.

Price is ridiculous. I bought that exact same 2002 Trek 5200 for $550 last year. Sold it for $800 a few months later.

Yeah, $800 max...tons of better options if you are willing to spend over a grand. Live anywhere near a Performance? Big weekend for deals there.

You're not going to find full Ultegra for that price. My 5200 is older than that. Frame and fork are still perfect except for paint: lots of miles on that puppy. If the components aren't worn, probably fine. It's a very good ride.

True enough...but does a 6500 group really trump a new 4600 with LBS support?
