Hey guys, I was thinking...

Can you switch an older road bike with a 1" threaded fork to a 1 1/8" thread-LESS fork? Before anyone flames me, it's not so hard on a BMX bike, that's my inspiration to ask. I want to replace a set of carbon forks but the 1" threaded type are few in number and VERY pricey. Plus I like the stem options for threadless as well. Is there any hope for me? (As far as newer style forks I mean:lol:)

1 1/8" does not fit inside 1"
Similar to the square peg, round hole conundrum.

1 option is a threaded 1" fork, with quill stem adapter so you can use a modern stem.

What's wrong with a square peg in a round hole? You just grind down the corners and bash it through with a mallet no? Alas, it cannot be. I wasn't sure if it was as obviously impossible as it seemed lol, but of course it is. I mean, NOMINALLY you plainly can't put 1 1/8" into a hole 1" across, I just thought maybe the ACTUAL dimensions allowed for fudging but it's not like that. (As you guys already know)

I decided on a compromise, I'm going to utilize the threaded carbon forks I have and mate them to a modern looking stem like a Deda Murex (which also fit the 26.0 bars I bought so win/win). Now I need to get myself a headset, and my front end will be put-togetherable!

Thanks guys for your replies. I definitely google stuff, and read Sheldon, and search the forum...but at the end of the day I like to talk to someone who's already done it. More often than not you can get a little knowledge that you wouldn't otherwise, or avoid a headache that you didn't foresee, or learn a trick or two to make life easier.

You could buy a fork with a 1" threadless steerer and use a 1-1/8" stem with a shim. It'll give you way more options and adjustability.
