Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

World Champions Jersey

Does anyone know why Jan Ullrich did not wear the World Champions Time Trial stripes on his jerseys during time trial stages? He was champion in '99 and '01, yet all photos of him during time trial stages, either on Team Bianchi or Team T-Mobile, show no rainbow stripes on his jerseys.

Are there other riders who choose not to wear the stripes after winning them?

He was the reigning world champion in those pics.

The question posed is why didn't he wear the stripes on his sleeve after he was world champion.

You have the right to wear the jersey in the discipline in which you won it, until the next championship, but you can have the stripes on your sleeve after you are reigning champion.

I would assume the rules changed at some point; every team and sponsor would want those stripes.

I understand. But he didn't do so after he was champion. I didn't know if there were other riders who also didn't show to the world that they were once a champ...

Armstrong stopped wearing the sleeve stripes after a while, too. Not sure what the reasoning behind it at the time was. I think he started just wearing yellow on his sleeve because he was so specifically targeting the TdF at that point.

I think that had more to do with promoting Livestrong, but its usually par the course from what I've seen to only wear the year of and/or after you won it - not the following seasons, right?

I don't care what people say about them today. I miss the days when Armstrong, Ullrich, Pantani and the rest were tearing it up.

I can't get there. When I think of guys like Mays, Mantle and Aaron people like Bonds, Clemens and Sosa just piss me off. Their ever lasting legacy will be that they degraded the sport. Just one man's opinion.

At some point it becomes part of the past. That Letterman's jacket that was earned in high school with all of those patches is okay to wear the first year out. But after that, time to hang it in the closet or put it in the trophy room.

And I almost forgot. 3 men's opinions.

Even though Jan didn't show the stripes after winning them, he suffered from the curse of the Rainbow Jersey, most notably during that 2003 time trial fall.
