Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yikes.

Yikes.

Hi all,

I'm really new to road biking and I may have already agreed to buy a bike I found on craigslist: Kestrel 12 speed carbon fiber (price reduced)

Have I been ripped off? Did I get a bargain? Or was the price spot on?

Thanks everyone!

Dan

I haven't bought it yet. However, I did stop by today, rode the bike for a bit and told him I'd be back tomorrow to buy it.

Thanks for the post!

I wouldn't buy that as my first road bike unless you really value nostalgia

Pretty cool bike if you're tall, & live where it's flat.

I've been looking at pictures of the 1993 Kestrel 200EMS/Dura-Ace and I think the bike might be different. The frame looks more like the 4000, but once more, I'm new to this.

Have a look:

Still a little lost on what year it may be....

Thanks for all the input everyone!

I wouldn't buy that as a first road bike. Too much money and down tube shifting.. Mid level modern bikes can be found for that kind of money all day long.

Would it be costly to switch the downtube shifting to index shifting?

That depends on if other non-DA shifters work with that DA rear derailluer. Some DA derailluers don't play well with non-DA shifters. You'd have to do your research on that.

Dude, you already have index shifting; the downtube shifters have index detents.

I think what you mean is integrated shift/brake levers, for example Shimano STI. Yes, that would get expensive unless you have the parts yourself and can install them yourself.

That's a cool bike, but an entry level $600 new road bike (with STI) would probably be better in many ways.

a buddy of mine with a DA-equipped (7-speed) Kestrel purchased these: Amazon.com : Shimano ST-A070 Road Shifters 2 x 7-Speed Black Pair : Bike Shifters And Parts : Sports & Outdoors and had them installed at the LBS on the cheap. It's entirely possible to do.

I wouldn't touch that. If it is indeed a 12 speed that would mean 6 speed cassette (uniglide...ugh!) or freewheel. That bike is too old for anything other than a nostalgia piece.

Because of the downtube shifters, I wouldn't even buy it for half that price.

As said above, it might be worth the asking price to someone collecting old Kestrels (though I don't know how many of those there are).

For a new cyclist getting a first bike, that $600 would go a long way at the LBS or a big box sports retailer, and would come with service plan. warranty etc rather than the standard craigslist caveat emptor.

Discussion about value and suitability aside, I'm surprised there's less emphasis on the OP having given his word. "I'll be back tomorrow with money" and "I'll hold it until X o'clock tomorrow" should both mean something. I know, they often don't.

I wouldn't go that far, but he should certainly let the seller know.

That's the nature of craigslist.
