Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cannondale Synapse Sora 7

I was looking at the Giant Defy 1 and Cannondale Synapse Disc 5 105, but considering how little I ride, I might be spending too much. I rarely ride more than 10 miles, and currently have a Fuji Absolute 3. How would the Cannondale Synapse Sora 7 compare to my current Fuji? Is it much of a step up? How much of a step down would it be from the bikes I was looking at? In general, what do you think of the Sora 7 for an older enthusiast?

Slight step up and plenty bike for 15-30 miles. You'll want to do more than 10 once you upgrade.

I think you'll find that you want to ride more if you have a nicer bike. No idea about the Fuji but 105 is generally considered a great place to start with plenty to offer as you rider more. I'm sure you'd be fine with sora as well but the 105 will have other upgrades as well like seat post, bars, stem, wheels might be better too. Disc is nice and 10 speed vs. 9 speed. Ride them both and see what you think.

Seems like the only major difference is going flat bar to drop bar. If that's worth the price than do it. Maybe look around for something used. You can probably get a 105 Synapse or similar for the price of the new Sora bike. I have a friend who has a Allez with Sora and he does 50 mile rides with no problems so Sora should work but I think the quality makes a noticeable leap when you get to 105
