Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Miyata Nine-Twelve or Raleigh Gran Sport?

I'm new to the road bike world. I'm wondering what you guys would recommend, a '76 Raleigh Gran Sport (I think) or an '85 Miyata Nine-Twelve? The Nine-Twelve, as you can see, needs more work. It's paint is scuffed up, needs new tires, tubes, and a new seat. The Raleigh is 50 bucks more expensive. Just not sure which is the better bike. Leaning towards the Miyata. All I want is something lightweight for riding around town. Thanks for any info. This forum has been a huge help thus far in my search.

Cheers.

Those are both low end bikes made of Hi-Ten tubing. I'd look further. In my area there are plenty of mid range vintage bikes made with Cr mo tubing that can be found in the $125-200 range. These bikes usually have better components as well. Rule of thumb is be weary of bikes with suicide brake levers.

The Miyata is not a low end bike. I believe it's an '85 model with triple butted tubing. I wouldn't even consider the Raleigh.

The Miyata looks pretty sweet to me. The Raleigh, not so much.

The 912 is a no brainer choice assuming it fits and the price is reasonable. This is a fine bike.
