My butt fell in love yesterday
With a pair of Pearl Izumi Elite shorts. I did a hot, very hilly 33 miles in them yesterday and was thoroughly impressed. Spendy as heck but the chamois is really awesome.

Wait till you try an actual nice pair of cycling bibs.
Enjoy the PIs until then.

Ignore the assos are the bomb or similar comments to follow. For the price the PI stuff is nice. A slight upgrade that might be worth it for you is the PI PRO line. More compression and a bit nicer chamois. I have found them at Performance on sale for around $120 which is a good price for a really nice set of bibs. I'm sure the assos are nicer (only tried on never actually rode) but at close to 3x the price of the PI PRO not really worth it.

I've pretty much tried them all and now go with PI Pro. I buy them when they are on sale. I think I'm good now for a long time with maybe eight pairs.

PI Pros are pretty widely regarded as being as good as the more expensive brands in comfort. The Elites are just as comfortable as the Pros IME and have more durable construction. Not trying to get in a flame war, just my opinion. Amazon runs a sale every January on PI stuff. I paid $82 for my Elites and $90 for my Pros (which I returned) and now run all Elites.

I don't know. I kinda miss the days of my Sergal wool shorts with the leather chamois. I'd wash them in Woolite and leave them out in the sun to dry. The Chamois was like a crispy taco shell when I put them on. After an hour or so of riding the chamois would soften up. Then I would take 3 or 4 rides before washing them again.

Just like everything else, opinion is subjective but the majority of people who have PI elite and pro bibs like and consider them "nice."

I knew that I was at some risk here, in my relative noobiness, saying that they were nice shorts. It's good to hear that there's better still. But I was really digging them. I've only used three other chamois and this'un is far and away superior.
I *think* that a $100 pair of shorts is about at my pain point, financially, as well. I'm reading that the Assos are 3X that? I'm sure they are awesome but I won't be paying $300 for shorts anytime soon!

I had the same PI shorts and they were good until I went with Giordana Lasers. Best shorts on the planet. I also have a pair of Giordana Silver line which are great also.

I'm not a big fan of PI. They run way too big for me, their M is like a L or a XL compared to other brands.

Except those are basically the entry level model and the PI PRO their high end model. I don't know if the Uno are really better than the PI PRO but maybe more on par with the difference being mainly dependent on what you prefer. The higher end assos should be "better" than the PRO but I looked at a $300+ pair and they didn't really seem all that much better. My De Marchi bibs have a very similar if not the same chamois as the nice assos stuff and while it's nice I don't really feel any difference when riding compared to the PI PRO. Also, the PROs really fit me well. Good compression and snug all around in size L (I'm 6'3" and 200lbs so their sizes probably run big - aka "fat american sizing"). I would like to try some of the other brands like Giordana but hard to find around here (to try on).
