Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have 1000 miles on Forte tape and it's nice. I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how nice.

Few hundred miles on Arundel bar tape. So far, I am a big fan as a gloveless rider.

I have been using the Performance "Grip-tec" tape, but it doesn't really last that long before it starts peeling. I just picked up some Planet Bike "Tachyon" tape that my LBS recommended. It's a cheaper alternative to Lizard Skins. We'll see how durable it is. It has a nice feel and was easy to install.

Decided to try the lizard skins. Its nice and cushy but it sure is rubbing off. This could be my fault though, i tend to constantly roll my hands if that makes sense. I have pretty much rubbed the top layer off of my steering wheel of my truck too. Anyway i just used some blue electrical tape to cover up my issue. Not the greatest look but i am sure going to get my use from the tape.

Haha...I have friends with steering wheels that have a bald spot on the top.

I've been using the Lizard Skins tape for a while now...and as long as they are properly installed...they should last a long time.

Lizard Skin is extremely good bar tape. Its a little pricier than the others but, it has a near perfect feel to it. I've tried the off brand equivalents and they are decent but, not in quite the same league as the LS.

favorite is the deda (regular) stuff but can never seem to locate it when i need new wrap. for me, it has the right amount of "squish" and cleanability (word?).
have done the forte, cinelli, lizard skin and fizik stuff here and there. out of those, prefer the cinelli. i like to double wrap my handlebars tho. makes it a lot
easier (for me) to clear 60+ miles w/o my wrists and hands getting too beat up-even wearing gloves.

Excellent. I just bought some 1971 steel and was wondering where I'd find some cloth tape. The new tapes are great, but they just don't look right on a 40+ year old ride. But no doubt, it's hard on the hands.

Did that in the early-mid 70's. But it's got to be cloth Of course I still have the tennis racket too (A Wilson, wood with cat gut strings!).

Self-fusing silicone tape. Makes all of the above quite obsolete as far as I am concerned.

+1 When I tried LizardSkin it wore off in one spot within a month. Overpriced garbage IMHO.

I saw someone with white Cali tape the other day. It looked pretty cool in person! Although I can't picture my self getting white bar tape. If my gloves get filthy - imagine my bars... I like black because of the low maintenance.

I was a confirmed Fizik Microtex devotee and asked the LBS to use it when building up my new Pinarello. They were out and used this Fizik Superlight tape instead. I almost swapped it out but got used to the feel of the tackier, more rubbery-feeling new tape and now wouldn't think of going back to my old Microtex. After about 1,250 miles the original Superlight tape started getting a little ratty so I changed it out last night.

I just swapped to the new Zipp service course CX tape after using Deda cork for years. Its similar in tackiness to the lizard skins and is priced pretty reasonably. Will report back after I get a bunch more miles on it on the durability

I am getting some Lizard Skin put on my old road bike. I picked it because I liked the texture, glad I picked well.

There are obviously a lot of good tapes out there, but basic Deda Elementi Logo tape is good stuff. Nice feel, some cushion, long enough for a wide bar, good colors, a bit of adhesive but still easy to rewrap if you need to do that, not too pricey, especially if you hunt around online.

I just wrapped my bars with some new Superlight, and it reminded me why I love it. It's easier to put on than the thicker, squishier tapes out there. Made me feel like a pro mechanic. $20 though. That's at least four cheeseburgers in bar tape.

Yes, it would! But not so well on my bike.. unless I change my all black color scheme and get a white saddle to match.

My bike would look something like this:
