I dont know about squirrels but has anyone ever got stung by a bee while riding? I thought I was going to fall off my bike because my muscle was spasming.

Trekke 03-29-05 04:06 AM

Sorry about you and your friend. Sounds like all will be ok except for the bikes and downtime. Where I live and ride (horse farms in the bluegrass region of Kentucky) you are more apt to get hit by a deer than a car. The lead rider says "deer up" instead of "car up". I had one run right out in front of my riding partner just last week. There were 20 deer standing just off the road. I have had them jump fences in front of me and had a fawn run along side me for over a mile last summer. I see lots of squirles but never thought they would be a threat. Now I know differently.

Thanks for the heads up.

two bee stings last fall both on the bike. first one was in the leg on a decent, the second deflected off my glasses and sent into my helmet stinging just above my left eye as i smashed it. both hurt alot. I am now told to take an epi-ped with when ever i ride as the last sting took 3-4 days to go down. :(

As for squirrels while racing in colledge one jumped into the pack and bounced off a few bikes. no one went down but when one off the guys gotback to the stared line and asked for a mechanical lap to get his brakes fixed the offical didn't belive there was a squirrel invoved... until the end of the race when everyone was like dude how many bikes hit the squirrel :D. the next race was alowed to have squirrel related mechanicals but the squirrels stayed out of it.

Sorry about the incident, I am glad you were not hurt ore than you were... good luck with the frame.

Was waiting for the anti-CF brigade to chime in. This time from a Cat 5 rider who can't finish a crit. Sage advice from a seasoned professional.

Personal attacks don't help your cause.

Amen, I don't know why people have to get so aggressive in cyber space among a fraternity of people who share a common love for cycling. Save it for the political forums.

A bee struck me in the face, just above my upper lip, while I was descending at 40 mph. The force of the impact caused it to sting me. I said a few words that can't be repeated here. It hurt the rest of the evening, and the next morning my face was swollen. The swelling continued throught the day, and was spreading towards my throat. This prompted a trip to the ER, and I now ride with an epi-pen also.

The next year I was riding down the same hill when two deer ran in front of me. They were so close that I could hear their hooves on the pavement, and I didn't even have time to hit the brakes. I think broadsiding one of them would have been a seriously bad day. Now I only ride up that hill, rather than down it.

Ugh! That's happened to me too! It got stuck in the strap of my bag, and my chest felt like it was going to blow up! No to mention that I was freaking out and almost ate it, LOL.

But... what happened to the squirrel? I want to know what condition it was in after being ground up in a bicycle wheel. I'm just curious in that way.....

VeloAnarchy 03-29-05 12:36 PM

Here are some photos. The first shot is of my front wheel. The others are of my buddies 5.9.

Wow, was that really called for? I respect my58vw for just being out there and for being honest enough to post his true results. Anyone could post about how great they are but instead he give's honest results showing how much he is suffering and how hard he is working to become better.

Wow, that is amazing. I'm impressed that your buddy walked away from that one without anything broken. Any word from the bike shop or Trek about crash replacement yet?

Grasschopper 03-29-05 12:41 PM

DAAYYYYMMM! I hope that was insured.

We were in the last 6 miles of a 45 mile ride on Saturday morning. We did 9 pretty decent climbs on the day. There were three of us. Kenny and I were drafting together at 22mph, Kenny leading, and the third was lagging behind just a bit behind. Well, I called "watch out for the squirrel". It was just off the shoulder ahead on the right in a sweeping curve. As Kenny passed by it turned and ran into his front wheel. It caught between the spokesd and his front forks and over the bars he went. I had no time to react. All I remember seeing is him laying on the ground while I think I ran over him. Then I went over my bars and landed on my head off the side of the road. Wow.... what a freak series of events.

I was pretty sore for a couple of days but an feeling much better today. My front wheel (Bortrager Race) and helmet (Giro Pneumo) are history. But no time in the hospital.... I'll take that. The other guy involved, Kenny, got a 2005 Trek Madone 5.9 SL for xmas. It sheered off his front forks, the wheel then hit the carbon fiber down tube and splintered it. Ouch! My loss of a wheel and helmet seem pretty insignificant to that. All from a squirrel.... I still can't get over that. Just thought I would pass my adventure along.

It could be worse. I am glad you are OK. The same exact thing happened here to a local rider. When he went over the handlebars from the squirrel he was paralized. Makes me wish I had wheels with a higher spoke count. Kind of scarry. I used to go without a helmet sometimes. Not anymore.

You can read about it on page 6.

Sad to see a nice new bike wrecked like that. :(

clfjmpr44 03-29-05 06:23 PM

Wow! glad you guys are relatively ok, too bad about the equipment though. On a side note, I didn't know they made fiberglass bikes! Not to CF bash as I have never ridden one, but those pics sure make you scratch your head about the material...

PhattTyre 03-29-05 06:36 PM

Sorry to hear that. If I were given that as a hypothetical situation I would guess that the spokes, with momentum and rider weight behind it, would just cut the squirrel in half. I'll start being a little more cautious around those little guys.

bentbaggerlen 03-29-05 06:45 PM

We had one get cought up in the timing chain of the tandem...It was gross to say the least.

redlemondrsx 03-29-05 07:03 PM

ha! dog hair, i had the same thing happen to me. i live in sacramento, and they flew in yesterday afternoon. it was weird, because theyve never migration has never gone threw here before. but it was gross, i could also hear them splatting against my helmet and were pasted to my legs. makes one feel greatfull for sunglasses!

iamlucky13 09-09-05 10:20 PM

Oh man...that sucks! I can't believe something that's not even big enough to make a decent hamburger out of can do that much damage.

I almost hit a squirrel in a racecar once, but I swerved and was gone before it could get under my tires. It was trying to though, and I bet it would've made a mess.

I haven't had anything this bad, But coming around the corner at full speed at the end of my block a dumb cat darted across and hit my fron wheel spokes at full speed and almost took me out.

shimanopower 09-10-05 03:34 AM

I think I know that squirrel... do you have a picture?

shimanopower 09-10-05 03:36 AM

wow.... that splintered down tube hurts to look at... ouch!
