Water Bottle?

I was loosing bottles right and left before I finally got the proper holder.
Now, I need to replenish my bottles.
I has some Specialized bottles and used them in two sizes, they are ok.

What kind do you use? Insulated or not?
Where to get them cheap?

danmc 07-03-14 01:40 PM

I find them on the side of the road from people who loosed them from ill-fitting holders.

Those you found last month are mine. Please, ship them back :)))

I picked up 4 new bottles with my PBK order last month. I think I paid about $1.85 each.

The insulated bottles are pretty nice.

Good places to shop for good stuff that is cheap are Nashbar and Ebay. Nashbar runs sales regularly so if you are patient you can save some $, though bottles by themselves are so inexpensive that the shipping could be a signficant part of the cost.

But they fit less liquid in them, don't they?

As a more casual biker, I bought an insulted bottle, but I never use it - when it's so hot I'd need it I don't really ride, my winter rides aren't long enough to need water really (I'll bring water, but just end up not using it) and you don't sweat much for winter riding.

I switched to stainless steel and now can't stand the taste of plastic. I use Klean Kanteen.

+1, I don't ever want to use a non insulated bottle again.

Makel 07-03-14 05:19 PM

Camelback bottles insulated.

Northwestrider 07-03-14 05:26 PM

A 62 oz stainless steel held in place by a Salsa Anything Cage.

+1 Camel Podium Big Chill.

Yep!

Elite Nanogelite if you have to have insulated. Otherwise....

Personally, I don't use insulated bottles as the ones I've tried are too hard to squeeze and get a good drink from. Decent quality plastic bottles, e.g. Camelbak, have no plastic taste, BPA, etc... The cheap give-aways often do taste like plastic.

I have a "nice" cage, but I wanted to carry more fluid, so I bought a cheapo metal cage, bend it a little & can put 32 oz Powerade & Gatorade bottles in it. It's a cheap solution that works well. I generally put water in the "nice" cage & put a bottle of Gatorade filled with frozen water in the ghetto one.

The only bottles worth buying. I fill them half full with water, tilt them on their side and freeze them overnight. The cool water will last about 90 minutes(which is the same as my consumption rate).

You need a strength coach. My 76 year old mother has no problem with hers.

Arundel Looney Bin dial adjusts to fit just about any bottle. Their Sport Cages are among the best normal cages out there with respect to security, ease of extraction and insertion, price and weight IMO.

The insulated bottles hold the same amount - they're taller.

The insulated ones I tried years ago were too hard to squeeze. When I'm really tired, even clicking the lever is hard work. However, I'll follow 10 Speed's recco and order 3 of the Big Chills. I have one cage on the tandem that won't fit a taller bottle. Though I'm not sure of that recco since I don't see a Big Chill bottle in that collection. Might be nice if the weather's hot for next weekend's one-day STP.

I use Polar:

Amazon.com : Polar Bottle Insulated Water Bottle : Sports Water Bottles : Sports & Outdoors

Fill it with ice and water and it stays pretty cold, even in Florida.

I always use Specialized Rib Cages:

Specialized Bicycle Components

Both are great products, and the new Polar bottles slide more easily into the
cage and are easier to squeeze.

The big chills are easy to squeeze. I also never close my valve while on the ride. Just leave it open, it doesn't leak. They're an excellent bottle. Just wish you could find them in better designs.

I'll have to check those out... although, it'd completely ruin the ghetto vibe my current set-up provides. HA!
