How good are Bibs?

Just a question about the Bibs . I been using shorts for years. and no problems find them comfortable

what benefits do you all bib wearers find compared to regular shorts?

do u find them hotter though in hot weather? when you have that extra material under your jersey?

Shimagnolo 07-05-14 07:07 AM

Pro: More comfortable.
Con: PITA when you need to use the restroom.

...when you have to pee you find their challenges ..

UnfilteredDregs 07-05-14 08:03 AM

They make me feel sexy.

mrFreel 07-05-14 08:09 AM

I find them to be more comfortable with no tightness around my waist. They never slide down. When I need to go it is just "over the top".

Bibs are good when you tuck the annoying shoulder straps into the waist and turn them into shorts. All problems solved.

moppeddler 07-05-14 08:34 AM

I don't get how having straps over your shoulders- one more thing to chafe/restrict/bother you is a good thing. Shorts work just fine for me. They don't slip, move or bother me any in any way. I've got one pair of bibs that I bought to try them, and only wear them when all the shorts are in the laundry.

I love that sensation of giving myself a wedgie.

FXjohn 07-05-14 10:45 AM

toddles, go outside or something

Sounds like, for you, bibs don't work. For me, I don't have any issues with them and prefer them so much more than shorts. They are not hot and I even wear a wool base layer on every ride regardless of temp. I think shorts are probably less of an issue for skinny guys. Those of us with a bit ore around the middle tend to find bibs more comfortable. As for nature breaks I find the Mavic and Castelli brands tend to make it easier than say PI and maybe Sugoi. Haven't tried much of anything else.

Here we go again. Many folks think they are better for all riders. A few folks think they are worse for all riders. Many riders who have no trouble with standard shorts don't see the need and object to the unnecessary problems caused by the bibs. Every rider has to decide for him/herself whether they are of any value. Judging by their growing popularity, odds are you will like them. "Not I," said the duck!

Since your question is directed towards bib wearers, I'll chime in. I've never found shorts to be terribly uncomfortable or too tight around the waist, but the fit and comfort of bibs is very noticeable. They keep everything nice a snug while your standing or in the saddle pedaling for hours. I don't think it matters much for short rides of 20-30 miles, but 3 hrs or more in the saddle, the comfort and fit will start to show. For those doing shorter rides under a few hours it probably doesn't matter much.

I live in FL and can say they are no hotter than shorts. There isn't much material above the waist and since its wicking material, it helps to evaporate sweat. You do have to remove your jersey to take a crap, but that takes all of 10 seconds to take off and put back on. Peeing while in bibs isn't an issue for me.

Try a pair of bibs on a long ride, then do the same in shorts. See if you notice a difference.

Bibs turn my junk magic. No kidding.

datlas 07-05-14 01:06 PM

Only one way to find out. Try them. You may love them and you may not.

The question you ask is akin to me asking if chocolate ice cream is better than vanilla when I have always eaten vanilla and like it just fine. Capishe??

Another thing that I like about bibs is that I can put a few extra bananas under the webbing in the back under my jersey... they ripen faster.

I've heard about the use of gas to ripen fruits.

Didn't know it worked that way, though.

For me the absence of a waistband is a real benefit. My PI shorts were constantly rolling at the waist. My PI bibs don't. Then there's my Assos bibs which are awesome.

laf 07-06-14 02:07 PM

Coming from a mountain bike, i tought that bibs were useless until I tried them. What a great difference in confort*.

coppercook62 07-06-14 02:18 PM

Once you try bibs you will never go back

datlas 07-06-14 02:39 PM

I heard they might be a good idea if you don't like your tight waistband. Not sure where I heard this, though...

FLvector 07-06-14 02:53 PM

^^^ probably from an oaf.......

Pirkaus 07-06-14 03:11 PM

I prefer bibs for all the reasons above.
I have never experienced chaffing from the straps, or any other part of any bibs I own.
When I started riding I had a pair of short, but waist band cutting into my abdomen, made my try bibs.
My advice, like others, is to buy a pair, with a chamois you know and like, and see if they're for you.
But remember, we told you so, and what are you going to do with all those uncomfortable shorts? ;)

I use shorts for the short rides.
Bibs on the long rides.

StanSeven 07-06-14 07:42 PM

I have several pairs of both and don't notice either once I start riding - until I have to go
