In order, the first three things that happen soon after a new bike purchase:
1. Remove dork disk.
2. Replace stock saddle.
3. Replace stock tires.

The spoke protector and reflectors are present on new bikes in the USA because they are mandated by the CPSC. Neither of them are actually much use for their intended purpose, so removing them is harmless.

If you have to ask any question relating to the dork disk or would consider using any method of removal other than taking the cassette off first, it's probably better to leave it on.

MY bike came with an 11-34 cassette, I swapped it to 12-25 and the dork disk did not cooperate with the 12-25, so off it came :-).
It felt so much nicer being less of a dork that I am considering taking the reflectors off, but will wait til a grey day when I need a jolt of coolness :-).

Oh please!
It's called A "dork disc"
Ie. A disc for dorks.
As in " only a dork would have this abomination on his/her stead.
Need I go on?

OP, if you get around to it and want to remove it do so. I'm guessing you have more pressing issues in your life. If you do not I want your life.

Ok, I gotta admit. That's pretty funny. A "Dura Ace" spoke protector! I'm sure it stomps all over the Ultegra version. And I'm sure I don't wanna know about the 105 version. Pffffft!!
I do remember reading that Mavic (I think) makes one that's barely larger than a 25T cog and thus virtually invisible on most cassettes. Maybe that would be a good compromise???
(though I recall I never found it on Mavic's website) (shrug)

This. My Roubaix came boxed to me at home. The rear wheel didn't go on until I had removed the dork disk. To be fair, I was replacing the 12-32 with a 12-28, so I was already removing the cassette...but I would have done it anyway!

So I actually never took the disk off my hybrid. It was clear & barely protruded past the large gear & was actually pretty easy to keep clean & I considered it insurance. Here's why......
A buddy I ride with has an S-Works, carbon everything, $8,500 bike. (yes, it's very nice) Well, he recently had a ride which cost him a nice chunk of change. His chain jumped the tracks, went into the spokes, sent him to the ground and he had to replace RD, cassette, chain, spokes & other minor repairs/adjustments.
My new EVO has a friggin' dinner plate for a dork disk. Sure, I'd love to just cut it off. BUT......it's not a month old yet & I consider it cheap (if not ugly) insurance for now.
What say ye??

I just cut the dork disk off my CAAD 8 after having the bike 10mo or so. While cleaning my bike a few days back I felt like it was time to get rid of it (cutting it off was a huge pain though). Currently, I don't have any problems with my RD and I'm never in the lowest gear/cog anyway.

I feel compelled to remove all of them. Every one I see. I get the twitches seeing old bikes at yard sales that have them. Someday I will save the whole world by removing every dork disc on the planet!

Was riding with a guy about a month ago, who dropped his chain to the inside shifting to his granny cog while standing and mashing a hill. The dork disc saved his spokes. Guess what happened to his RD hanger?
"I think I have tools to fix this in my bag." Um, no, don't think so. Need to borrow my cell phone?
Next time, if you don't know how to set limit screws, consider using your small ring and a mid range gear, instead of trying to mash big/big.

What's the harm in cutting it off vs taking the cassette off?

Dork disc won't protect against chain drops. That's what a chain catcher is for. I think you mean the chain went past the easiest cog on the cassette and hit the dork disk rather than the spokes.
