Murphy's law

Just bought a brand new road bike. My first... What happened 5 minutes after leaving the shop, just as the shop was closing?

Fiery 07-19-14 04:34 AM

Something that you should know how to fix yourself, but you wanted the shop to do?

hueyhoolihan 07-19-14 04:55 AM

IDK... they locked the front door?

A puncture... No tubes, nothing. The shop closed. 15km away from home.

Well, with hindsight being 20/20, at least now you can see you should've gone tubeless. :roflmao:

The question is: Will you ever again go riding without a patch kit/spare tube, tyre levers and a pump?

I absolutely will not. I went straight out and bought two new tubes... What's your opinion on CO2... FAF? The way I see IR is if you aren't racing and aren't pressed for time it just means extra space.

You've asked a question that will result in many comments, but I personally prefer a small, good quality high-pressure pump that mounts under the downtube bottle cage; I am virtually guaranteed of being able to pump up at any time on a ride. Others prefer CO2.

BoSoxYacht 07-19-14 08:32 AM

I prefer to carry/use CO2 when on the road, but I will use a pump or compressor instead if it's available(to save money).

f4rrest 07-19-14 08:48 AM

At least you weren't 150k away without mobile reception. Consider it a cheap lesson.

hueyhoolihan 07-19-14 08:49 AM

running out of co2 cartridges is more likely than getting a flat five minutes after purchasing a new bike and no patchkit from your LBS that has just now closed.

get a pump.

steve220 07-19-14 10:12 AM

Carry both?

FLvector 07-19-14 10:21 AM

I air up prior to each ride using a floor pump, but on the road bring two CO2 cartridges. If you need more than two cartridges, you're either doing something wrong or terribly unlucky.

Vicegrip 07-19-14 10:52 AM

Good mini pump. Buy it once. works the first time works the 10th time. Take care of someone else or your own flat and not be low on kit after. Tiny person with tiny arms perhaps CO2 is needed. Tube in ziplock bag then ruberbanded to the mini pump and parked in center pocket rest of the stuff in under seat trunk.

Keep 2 co2 cartridges and device but get a mini pump that attaches to bittle cage, , just in case and as you have learned, the just in case stuff always happens.

Bike must have come with some lousy tyres.

f4rrest 07-19-14 01:53 PM

Also useful, so you can pump up at a service station as a last resort:

I won't ride around the block (2 miles) without my pump, spare tube and patch kit
Pirk

cmacparland 07-19-14 02:57 PM

Yeah. I´ve decided C02 is just added bulk. Two spare tubes, a patch kit, a mini pump, multitool, water, food, wallet, phone... Anything else....? No.

TMonk 07-19-14 03:42 PM

bring a tire boot too... something like a short, narrowed section of another tire that you can use if your tire gets slashed.

RISKDR1 07-19-14 05:47 PM

That wasn't Murphy's law. That was Irving's law.

Irving's law says "Murphy was an optimist"
