Gear equivalent of Double and Triple
Gearing is not my forte I'll admit and I'm wondering if someone can help me find the equivalent
of:
Double: 39x27 but in a Triple set up like this: Crankset 30/42/52 Cassette: 12-26
In other words:
39/27 = what combination in a triple (above) ?
Thanks

Hey, thanks a lot 53-11.
I'm trying to determine where I am (ride a triple now, like above) in terms of perceived effort if I were to buy a new bike (possible CF) with a double. I want to make sure if I can handle the steepest hills on that 30/21. I guess it should be ok (I hope)
Just in case, because I love going steep hills, what's the lowest gearing a Double set-up can take w/o losing efficiency ? 39/32 perhaps ?

you can do triple/double comparisons galore w/ this:

It seems pretty basic, and gearing isn't my forte either, so I'm not sure if it takes everything important into account. But it seems like a good start.

Why not get a Compact Crankset with a 50x34 chainrings.. You would need a 23 in back to equal your 39x27 gear ratio..
That is why the compacts are becoming very popular..

Talk to me more about this gear-inches thing. Is gear-inches an apples to apples comparison of effort required to move at the same speed?
i.e. if i had my front on chainring X and rear on cog Y and I switched my front to A and rear to B and they had identical gear-inches would i be going the exact same speed/cadence up the hill?
I'm also trying to decide on a double or triple. Right now I have a triple with an 8 speed and I dont ever use the smallest chainring up front. I'd like to know if i had a 10 speed woudl i be able to get teh same useable gear ratios with a double or would i still need a triple.

Lets assume a pretty much "standard" off the shelf double and triple. If you only use the middle and big chainrings on the triple, and shift to a double, you will have more lower range. The middle on a triple is bigger than the small on a double. The big rings are the same. The cogs are also the same.
There are, of course, choices of ring size and cassettes.
With a 10 speed cassette, you get the same top and bottom gears. But, closer ratios.
