Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - Aug 9/10

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise Reports - Aug 9/10

Tell us about your cycling this weekend ... or other sports you participate in. Did you go somewhere interesting? Who did you ride with? Got pics?

Friday - little bit of walking at lunch after a strenuous running/walking/rowing workout yesterday evening.

Saturday - 7+ km walk along the foreshore next to the beach and along the beach. Just beautiful! I love the sound of the water and birds ... and breathing the ocean air.

Heavy fog this morning, but under this bridge is where the body Michael Jordan's father was found in McColl, SC. Deep in the boonies, no other cyclists around here.

We did the mini Coldwater route today; 42.4 miles with one quick descent into the Coldwater valley and a long, easy drag back out. The Coldwater area is one of my favorite areas to ride; so many choices of direction and hills and hidden valleys to explore.

There were a lot of us at the start so we broke into two groups. I was in the faster group but it later split into the much faster group and the regular fast group; I was in the latter. Still, we were hammering along at a really nice pace; there not being much in the way of hills. My group did pick up a couple of stragglers off the front group but they were some serious minded hammerheads.

There was a sort of sprint at the end and I gave it my best but I started just a bit late and came in second. Still, it was good to leave it all on the road.

42.4miles, 17.1mph, max. speed just 34.5mph

30 miles nice and easy in about 2:15 with the family on the local path here in the Springs in the morning, then nice easy 30 min jog tonight.

Never ridden a rode bike before, but if the weather holds tomorrow I'm headed down with my dad to rent one from the LBS and give it a whirl. Thinking a nice 50-60 mile spin w/ some climbing ought to give me a chance to see what I think and some clear strava data about how much one can outperform a mountain bike with 2" knobbies.

Friday I did my 17.3 mi. TT for the first time this year. The route has 1,000 ft. of elevation and I hit some headwinds but still managed 16.6 mph. Yesterday I did my club's B ride which was 65 mi. with approx. 3500 ft. elevation at 14.6 mph. I was pretty wiped out thanks to the TT but did well. That is until the last 1/4 mi. when my chain came apart. But, that's another story.

Got out the door a little too late to join the Sunday group ride, so went off solo west and north. I keep telling a friend of mine that I am going to knock on his door one Sunday morning, so that is where I headed. Started getting rained on about 30 minutes in and ended up getting soaked 4 different times today, along with wet roads and wind. The cloud cover and rain was nice and cool, though. Passed by a farm that breeds miniature donkeys. Didn't know there was such a thing. There is also a couple of llama breeders in the area that I rode, but didn't see them today. Ran across a good size group ride that I slipped in behind for about a mile before I turned off. At the back of the pack was a couple on a tandem made of bamboo.
It was a good ride despite the rain. 63.3miles/101.8K

Forty five miles today, with a little bit of climbing up through Casitas Pass.

Then down along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Machka, I notice in your photos of ocean/beach an almost complete absence of homes or sevelopements. Is this typical or are most areas heavily developed as they are here in the US.
BTW, that top photo, how long does the path go on for.

Nawp. Storms rolled in around noon and it stayed in the low 60s with rain and lightning. 8M easy jog in a little less than 60 min, then hour on the trainer at nice light pace.

Road bike fun tomorrow though

Australia is about the same size as mainland USA.

Australia's population is about 23,560,853
Population clock

USA's population is about 318,631,000 ... 13 times greater than Australia's population.
Population Clock

So, no ... it is definitely not as heavily populated here as in the US.

And the majority of those 23,560,853 (approx.) people, here in Australia, live in 5 cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. Those cities contain approx. 14, 278,228 (60%) of the population ... and the remaining 9 million or so are scattered around in smaller cities/towns.

This is a list of Australian cities by population.
List of cities in Australia by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tasmania (where we live now) has a population of approx. 500,000 (roughly half of which are in the Greater Hobart area). For comparison, Tasmania is a little bit larger than West Virginia but not quite as large as South Carolina.

Australia is an island and is surrounded on all sides by beaches and oceans ... and of course, Tasmania is a smaller island, surrounded by beaches and oceans. There are some areas where the beaches are quite developed (the Gold Coast in Queensland, for example) but there are vast areas of beach, with practically nothing in the way of development ... sometimes completely nothing in the way of development. And those are the areas where we prefer to go.

Where we were on the weekend is a small city/large town of about 25,000 people. So there is some development, but it is mainly along the large river that flows out to sea. That's where ports and industries etc. were set up. Our caravan park was on the eastern edge of town, right next to that beach in the photo.

The paved part of the path was 2.8 km, according to a sign. But it turned to gravel at the far end and just kept going. We walked that for a while, and then headed down to the beach and walked on the beach for a while because the tide was going out and it was safe to do so. We could have returned to the gravel path and kept going further, but decided to turn around when we reached a little stream crossing the beach. In the other direction, toward the town, the path reaches the river and follows it up for a little way. Then on the other side of the river there's another path along the foreshore of the river and ocean. It looks like they've done quite a bit of foreshore development on that side ... it's looking good. We did a little bit of walking over there too, and this evening I'll post a photo of one of the lookout areas attached to the edge of a bluff.

Here's me at the Gold Coast, Queensland in 2004 ... you can see how built up it is there. That's in December, so the beach is quite busy too ...

Got confused about which day the club race was on and missed it yesterday. So I went out for a long ride this morning and made it my first Century. Longest to date previously was about 85 last fall, and longest to date this year was only about 55. Sure wish I hadn't done it solo, though.
