1995 Trek 1220 needs some work
I decided to take in my old bike and get it ready to ride. I new it needed a good tune up and new tires. I was expecting about $200.
But the brifters are dead. Luckily they can get replacements for the 7 speed cassette but now I am looking at about $400.
Part of me is thinking it isn't worth it but the other part of me knows it is a heck of a lot cheaper than a new bike.

If you don't work on bikes, then yes, it's expensive. If the bike hasn't been used in a long time, there may be gunk blocking the cogs that YOU might be able to clean out. You wouldn't know until you did it. Video 8 - Clean and Repair shimano integrated brake shifters (brifters) - YouTube

There's a couple of guys on eBay who will repair early Shimano 7-speed brifters, and warranty their work for less than $60 a pair. Way cheaper than buying new ones.

The older metal 7-speed brifters are much better made than those new all plastic 7-speed brifters in the link.

If I had a set of malfunctioning early 7-speed RSX, RX100, or 105 or 8-speed Ultegra metal brifters (mine are all working at this point), I would try lubricating the snot out of them first, and if that did not fix them, I'd go ahead and send them to be fixed, BEFORE I ever bought a set of the new all plastic 7-speed brifters.

if i went to the LBS and simply handed them the bike and said "fix this" and then asked how much i owed, IMO, i would pretty much be guaranteed to pay about as much as possible. like going into the pro shop at the country club and buying a new set of clubs and bag and clothes... well just about ANYTHING.

To be fair, my LBS did look at cheaper options. They found some tires that had been taken off a brand new bike when the buyer upgraded. They looked for the 7 speed shifters instead of telling me I needed a new cassette as well.
Yeah, I do need to learn to work on my bike.

7 speed shifters are delayed 3-4 weeks. My other option was to go 8x2 which would just annoy me.
