New To Road Biking --> Is this older bike worth it?

After spending quite a bit of time reading around on how to get a good budget road bike, a common theme that kept popping up is getting one on craigslist. As a student the less I can spend the better, however there's no way in he** I'm getting a department store bike (I was contemplating bikesdirect however). I had an original budget of ~600-700 dollars however after seeing this I'm quite tempted to just get since even after upgrades it'll be much cheaper than some of the other offerings I've seen thus far on craigslist.

Here's the bike stock:

Craigslist Link: (The person has added a carbon fork and handlebars).

I'm just curious if this bike is worth the 300 (which I hope it is) and how the Ultegra 6500 group set (albeit older now) compares with the newer ultegra, 105, etc.

Thanks for any input as I'm just a newbie at road biking (been riding my heavy mtn bike for years now) ><

Looks reasonable, assuming the size/fit is right.

Aslong as the drivetrain is still in good shape kind of hard to go wrong on it for $300. You certainly aren't going to find something new that is better for that price.

That's a good deal and a bike that should serve you well.

You can may need to replace tubes/tires/cables/cable housings/chain to get it into tip-top shape, so if $300 is the very top of your budget, understand that you might need to continue to drop cash into it over the next month-or-so before it is optimally ridable.

Sure, solid buy...but don't 'upgrade' it. Make sure it fits, get it ridable (so maybe chain and cables), see how much (or little) you take to cycling, keep as rain bike/commuter/etc. or sell for most of what you've invested.

Make sure the shifters still work correctly and smoothly shifts through all 18 gears.
