Coca-Cola as a recovery drink

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Coca-Cola as a recovery drink

With all of the contracts I assume pro teams have with nutritional companies and the strict nutrition plans these riders stick to, why do I see so many riders immediately after a race (when I'm watching the tdf, veulta, etc) drinking a coke? I can understand a quick influx of sugar and caffeine, but why a coke and not the Skratch or power bar equivalent? I avoid soda, but if I want a good recovery drink, without spending a bunch of money on these recovery drinks, should I just drink a coke?

Coca-cola is one of the worst drinks you could ever put in your body.

There is absolutely nothing about Coca-Cola/Pepsi/etc. that improves your health. Aside from things that weren't meant for human consumption, such as motor oil or porcine waste run-off, there really isn't anything worse that you could put in your body. What in the world would possibly make you think it could be good for you?

its hardly one of the worst things you can put in your body. its not a good recovery drink but during a ride it can be great, which is why the pros do it all the time. It tastes good, and your body can't tell the difference between one source of glucose/fructose from another

Just imagine how my Skratch/Power Bar stuff they are consuming over a 3-week period. Even the best-tasting sports drinks get old after a while. I don't know what it is, but there's just something refreshing about a Coke (I'm a Sprite person, myself) on a hot day.

A Coke now and then isn't the end of the world. It's these people who drink nothing but Coke all the time and can't fathom drinking just plain water who are in trouble.

I drink a couple Cokes on my climbing rides at about mile 70 if it's hot out. I usually recover with chocolate milk.

They typically drink 150ml cans in the Tour. That's about 5 oz. Even the biggest Coke fan on the tour, who may have one or two during the stage and one afterwards probably drinks at least 30 oz of water to every oz of Coke. Even if you think Coke is the vilest liquid one can drink, taken with that much water its effects will be minimal.

Sometimes you can find 8 oz cokes in the US if you really wanna Coke after a long ride but are worried about destroying your body.

I get a 355 ml bottle of Mexican Coke every now and then. I'm not a big health nut, though.

Preach it, BoSox! I personally know several people who, after just one sip of Coca-Cola, have died from this nightmarish fluid!

I'm sure everyone knows someone who's jumped off a tall building after drinking one too many Red Bulls.

Drinks are bad!

150ml of Coca-Cola is barely a mouthful in 'Merica.

BTW: yes to 6-8oz of ice cold chocolate milk as a recovery drink.

I did watch it, before I posted. It didnt provide any substance to your argument in which coke specifically, and not an excess of calories contributed to obesity, and what about coke specifically is worse for you than any other sugar filled drink out there, including ones from hammer or skratch labs. So where is the science?

Totally, just bite the top off and knock it back!

They gave Lance a family-size coke cuz he's American. He's like "Cool, I gotta clean the engine in my Subaru."

Coke is basically water with a lot of sugar. Considering how many calories a pro racer expends, drinking a can of coke is not really going to matter much. Also, I'd bet that Coca Cola pays big to have their particular sugared water available at the end of the race so that you and millions of others can see what a healthy beverage it really is.

Coke is great with some orange juice mixed in (if Spezi isn't available in your area.)
