Used 2005 Trek 1500 or New HASA R4

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Used 2005 Trek 1500 or New HASA R4

Hey guys, new poster here. Trying to get into road biking and deciding between getting a used 2005 trek 1500 or a new HASA (an off brand) from amazon for 450. Trek is similar price, although lower.

Heres the TREK: 2005 1500 - Bike Archive - Trek Bicycle

Heres the HASA Amazon.com : 2015 HASA R4 Road Bike Shimano 2400 24 Speed 58cm : Road Bicycles : Sports & Outdoors

Any and all tips appreciated.

I know people will say I should spend more and get a new bike from a local bike shop but, all of their road bikes, without exception (specialized, raleigh) start at at least $699 which is just too much ove rbudget. Even that 450 HASA is pushing it as I'm trying to stay below 400. In an ideal world I'd just buy a new 1k bike, of course, and that is my upgrade plan, but I just don't have that kind of money right now.

Anyway, Thanks for the advice.

Alex

Is the trek available locally so you can ensure it fits? What is the condition? Buying a bike from Amazon requires you to do some research to ensure quick sizing. It will also require some assembly and will likely need to be dialed in by either you or a bike mechanic. The Local shop will probably do it but might not like it.

If the Trek is in good condition, I would go that route. 9 year old 105 components are probably still better than 2013 Claris. Despite the description, the HASA is heavy - probably 2+ lbs more than the trek.

Thanks,

They mentioned that the shifters needed to be tuned but it seems to be in good condition. It is also 100 less, so perhaps just getting the Trek is a better deal even if I need to put in a small amount of work.

It is local so I can try it out, although I am not an expert to tell if it is a perfect fit. Being 6'2 it is possible I need a '60 instead of a '58

I'd definately take the trek. I've never heard of the brand "HASA" and I'm sure the chances of something going wrong with a wheel is 3x more likely than with the used Trek's pieces.

Sounds like the choice is made. 58 would probably work fine for you. I'm 5'11 and a 56 fits me perfect. Worse case you can raise the seat and buy a longer stem.

Might be worth spending a little to have a shop kube the Trek and dial it in, since it is cheaper..... Unless you can do this.

Is kube a misspelling of lube? or is there something else? I did quick google of 'kube' and nothing came up.

Also, but unrelated, any cheap bike pedals, or bike pedal + shoe packs you recommend? I see all of these bike shoes and all of these peals and really have no idea which ones are necessary. Within reason, cheaper is better.

Also, thanks so much for your help on deciding to get the trek. its a craigslist buy so... We'll see if it really goes down.

cool. I hope that didn't seem mean spirited--since it was not. Really, I'm just such a newbie at this that any term would confuse me

Also, thanks to icysmooth for your opinion on this issue as well.

is it too late for me to cast my vote?

I'd take the Trek all day long. It'll be lighter and shift nicer.

Done, next question?

Ha, the handlebars in that stock trek photo are so awkard. I'd think you can talk the guy down to 375-350 if you try. This one is listed for 409 or best offer on EBay, which normally gets higher prices than CL-

Careful with the sizing. I'm 6'3" and I bought a used 60cm Trek 2500 to get into road bikes a few years ago, it was a good fit. For me, a 58 would be too small unless I had a 130-140 mm stem and setback seat post. Everyone's geometries are different, and if you end up being too big for it you could just re-sell it and maybe even make a little profit if you negotiated well and clean it up.
