This is going to be hilarious...

So I get hooked into riding an event called "Corporate Challenge". It's a pseudo Olympics for companies. All kinds of events from track, to corn hole, to cycling, tug of war, you get it. Something for everyone.

So the cycling event is a six mile time trial. It's on public streets and they are not closed off (but there will be police to attempt to exert some control). Two major intersections (you cross the same street twice, once headed south, then back headed north).

500 (approximately) cyclists. Starting at 15 second intervals. And no drafting.

It's supposed to rain.

I can't wait. :D

I might have to borrow a camera to video this.

Oh, and time trial bikes are OK...that I cannot wait to see. :roflmao2:

A friend's company used to have mini-bike races. Time trials through the office with obstacles to be negotiated, all while staying on the bike.
Something similar to this;

As the winner, he was allowed bring the bike home, so a few of us got a test run on it. Thing was impossible to ride. But a lot of fun. Sounds much more appropriate for an office Olympics than a road tt.

The top rider last year hit 30mph on a course with traffic. Around 23-24 is pretty average for a course with a really bad stretch of pavement and traffic.

There are around 150 companies participating. It's a big deal. And they group them by size/number of employees..

Campag4life 09-15-14 01:35 PM

Out of all those companies there should be some strong cyclists in there.
Without having a closed course, seems like a lottery in terms of traffic which would affect time...not really an even playing field.

Mentally prepare yourself to crap over 149 companies and destroy the competition with your S6. Very interested in the result. : )!!

dralways 09-15-14 03:19 PM

Maybe I'm missing something but where's the hilarity come from? Sounds like a fun competition to me..

woodcraft 09-15-14 03:33 PM

The corn hole part sounds sketchy.

caloso 09-15-14 03:34 PM

500 riders? Really? They should do some sort of qualifying, or at least seeding, or else it's going to be complete chaos.

Elvo 09-15-14 03:53 PM

500 riders of varying fitness riding on public streets at their 15/20 min power on an out and back course. What can go wrong?

hamster 09-15-14 03:57 PM

Two major intersections? As in, traffic lights? Amazing.

dralways 09-15-14 03:59 PM

Ah, shows what I know as someone who's never ridden in a group before.

Wow who comes up with these ideas

StanSeven 09-15-14 04:53 PM

500 riders at 15 second intervals is going to create a solid stream. If it's competitive nobody is going to stop for traffic. Should upset lots of motorists.

zonatandem 09-15-14 04:54 PM

In stead of a TT do a mass start road race . . . takes less time.

caloso 09-15-14 05:04 PM

Time to buy 3M stock. Tegaderm sales are going to go through the roof.

That stuff is wicked awesome. I went through a few packages after a nasty double endo on the MTB last spring.

Not at 15 second intervals. There will be some bunching up, especially at intersections. With police presence, most people won't dare to run red lights, but instead will gather in bunches and then sprint all at once as soon as the light turns green, which, considering the rain and complete absence of stratification by skill (once-in-a-blue-moon cyclists on MTBs side by side with serious dudes on time trial bikes), would make things very interesting.

+1. Watch your backside. ;)

Nachoman 09-15-14 05:43 PM

Where can we sign up? I plan on winning.

Rowan 09-15-14 05:46 PM

Gee, such doom and gloom.

What happened last year? Top speed 30mph, average around 23-24?

I could almost guarantee that, because the companies take this seriously, that the talent within the entire TT group will be far more than what exists in the 41 here.

I can think of a lot of adjectives, but none of them are synonymous with "funny". Why can't they just do a 3-legged race?

goenrdoug 09-15-14 05:59 PM

I want to see live streaming video of this with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen announcing it.

StanSeven 09-15-14 07:15 PM

I haven't noticed this event much in the past few years in the east but I've participated before in running. Companies do take it very seriously. I don't know for certain but I saw high quality racers for the first time in the area which makes me think there are ringers brought in.

rms13 09-15-14 07:18 PM

Time trial where you have to cross intersection that may have cross traffic sounds like a great idea
