Does the Mechanics's forum have BO or halitosis?
Why do so many folks come to Road for answers about mechanical issues, installation instructions, disassembly problems, etc.? The real experts are on Bicycle Mechanics.

I refer specifically to the inquiry currently on the front page of this forum regarding proper torque for a carbon rail saddle. Why come here with that? I could ask the OP of that thread, but it happens all the time. Just wondering why so few folks go to Mechanics for their answers.

They do the same with their A & S questions, C & V questions, Foo nonsense, Training and Nutrition, Racing, etc.

Yeah, no doubt. But I am talking about stuff they have. Why ask another dork like you and me?
Why not ask the guys who really know? Mechanics doesn't just mean fixing stuff. It also includes installation, assembly, disassembly.

Traffic... it's about traffic. There are only single digit visitors in the other forums every time I checked whilst there are hundreds in 41.

I think that there's also something to be said about receiving advice from peers - that someone knows their stuff doesn't mean that they'll approach a problem with sensibilities common for a given discipline. Additionally, having at least a passing familiarity with the advice giver is worth something, too - everything is sales, even freely given advice. A complete stranger may give a short, sweet and absolutely correct answer, but without knowing something about them, they may not instill enough confidence for you to move on with the procedure. If, however, you have an inkling of whether or not someone usually gives sound advice, a lot of doubt and/or the process of feeling out their qualifications can be avoided.

If it's a non-C&V mechanics question I ask it on the Bicycle Mechanics forum and have had great success there. If it's about one of my classics the question goes on C&V. People there have been biking for decades, and they are both helpful and respectful

Oh, and also it is impossible for too many people to have the pleasure of having had some interaction with me. Lots , but never too many.

...when I first started posting on teh Biekforums, most of my posting was in mechanics, a little in C+V.
I thought maybe it was a good idea to try to help some people out with advice, similar to what I do here at the co-op.
It turns out that this is much harder than it seems, because there are (or at least were) some very argumentative guys
in the mechanics forum, and there is only one way, they've been doing it for years, and that's all she wrote.
When you add to the mix the well intentioned but clueless who always seem compelled to offer an opinion, and the
general anonymous nature of the innerweebz...( I think someone already mentioned you don't always know whether
someone here actually knows what they're talking about).......it just becomes too much of a time suck.
I kinda know who roughly can be counted on in there for good advice, but only after a couple of years of seeing
people go into foam flecked, spitting, seething outrage over such topics as whether or not a Vernier caliper is adequate
for measuring and working on things bicycle, the use of anti-seize versus grease, and of course, the ever popular
"What's the best chain lube ?" I can recall one thread where the OCD compulsion to have wheels laced with the hub label
visible through the valve stem hole went on for like 15 or 20 pages. That was hugely entertaining, but useless.
I gave at the office. So I can understand some reluctance to ask mechanical questions in that forum if it is still the
same as it was a couple of years ago. Maybe you ought to go in there and start a thread on rim flexibility ? #thatwouldbecool
