Hating Ribble Right About Now

Ordered a 11sp 5800 105 group set from Ribble. First, they forget to include the support bolt and plates for the FD so I had to get that on ebay. Then I got the group installed on my bike and me and a bike nut friend couldn't get the rear indexing dialed in. Tried another cassette, longer housing, made sure the cables weren't crossed the the DT and it still wouldn't shift right. Finally it occured to me to check the P/N on the RD and found out they sent me a 10sp 5701 RD (the cable pull changed on 11sp). Pretty annoyed with Ribble right now. They've cost me a lot of money sourcing these parts locally. I don't have high hopes for their customer service.

Dunbar 09-17-14 02:09 PM

Oh, and they look very similar so it's not like I could've spotted the difference.

Most will come to their defense. I have ordered a ton of stuff from them. I don't know about their customer support because I have never had a problem. Mistakes happen. Sounds like you drew the short straw and it happens to all of us. A courteous email and ask for their support and hopefully you will get it resolved.
That's what you get for not ordering at least Ultegra 6800 ;)

Dunbar 09-17-14 02:42 PM

I e-mailed asking for a meager $10 refund for the support plates I ordered on ebay. They asked for a receipt and then never responded. We'll see what they say about the RD. My main priority is to get the bike up and running. My only other bike has flats and a rack so it's not quite as fun to ride.

rpenmanparker 09-17-14 02:49 PM

Isn't it strange that folks develop a position on a customer service issue based on their paranoia before they have even registered a complaint and can't wait to post it? Why not wait until the best resolution possible has been reached, and then report to us how well or poorly it went. This reminds me of the evening news on TV. Everything is done to create sensation and suspense. You know, "Guess what happened today in the legislature that you won't like. More when we return from 10 minutes of commercials." Or, "You aren't going to like the weather this weekend. Details at 10:00." I, for one, am not waiting with baited breath to find out how well Ribble takes care of you. I know they will make it right. Although if you wanted them to keep you whole, you should have given them the chance to send the missing parts. It isn't fair to expect them to pay your price for items that they either paid less for or got free as part of a kit.

rpenmanparker 09-17-14 02:54 PM

BTW, what are a support bolt and plates for a FD? Do you mean the mounting clamp?

Dunbar 09-17-14 03:03 PM

I already registered a complaint over a week ago on the support plate. They responded asking for a receipt, which I sent, and never heard back from them.

The support plates for Shimano 11sp protect the frame where the derailleur pushes against it. It's all detailed in the install manual if you're really curious how it works...

I have a few 5800 RD's in the garage (one extra), wonder if I should double check 'em. I ordered two full groups from Ribble and was missing a BB, which they quickly supplied after an e-mail exchange.

achoo 09-17-14 04:12 PM

Did you pay by credit card? Charge back the cost of the items they didn't send. That'll get their attention.

WTH?? ;)

Actually, I think I remember you ordered a couple for 2 different bikes and an extra cuz.....well.....who doesn't need an extra 5800 RD, right?? :p

To the OP.....I don't know if I should be surprised or not. Obviously Ribble sells these puppies cheaper than most. I wondered (especially when 5800 was first out) whether there's some story. I mean, if you pull the groupset as a BOX set, then how can you screw it up. BUT, if they pull 'em as OEM-type packaging......(bins of lots pulled separately, thus *making* a groupset and selling it as retail)......then I can see how this stuff could happen. Missing parts, mixed parts, etc.

IOW, I'm guessing it doesn't show up like this from Ribble.........

It's definitely OEM. Saw over on RBR someone ordered an some 6800 brakes w/ their 5800 group and they got one 5800 and one 6800 brake from Ribble.

Yeah, I ordered two 5800 groups when they were <$408. I do a little flipping on C-List and ebay and figured maybe I could make a few bucks on the second group. Worked out pretty well, but not perfect. The buyer wanted a clamp style FD when I only had braze-on (etc.)...so I've re-ordered a couple pieces and now have a few extra bits. But I've still done a little better than just buying one group for myself. No boxes at all for my stuff.

Did you give Ribble a chance to make it right, before you started buying the parts on e-bay?

Nope, I can't be without my bike for weeks because of their screwup.

That's what I was thinking also, AFTER they have had plenty of opportunity to fix it to your satisfaction.

Discover Card has been good the few times I needed to make a claim (against Verizon & an auto parts store)

Thanks, I might have to do that if they don't make it right. No response today from the inquiry I sent yesterday on their website.

They jacked my 5800 order up, too. They shipped me damaged parts and sent me a black crankset for my silver group. Posters here criticized me for posting about my poor experience. Those posters need to shut up now.

Apparently the British are having serious problems figuring out which part goes in what box. Maybe if they had an assembly line with little part-shaped holes so only the right one would fit, they could do this better. Their warehouse personnel need some remedial kindergarten education, at least.

Perhaps buying parts from a UK vendor was not the best choice in that case. What if your order had been held up in customs for a week?

You gambled on trying to save some money and lost. It happens.

bt 09-18-14 09:50 PM

WTF is a support plate?? Thought it was a backup plate and support bolt????

why wasn't the support bolt installed in the FD already?

I need answers and I need them NOW!

Bummer about the RD, that looks like it would be tough to catch during install while you're all giddy and such.

If you don't know, then you shouldn't be installing a groupset.

I kind of come down on this side of the fence. I have ordered many times from Ribble in fact and did so a couple of months ago and they got my order perfect...involved mixture of DA and Ultegra derailleurs. They have shipped thousands of parts to the US and probably get is right 99.9% of the time which btw isn't easy. And of course it sucks if they don't but we buy from there because of cost so no it won't have the convenience of a US seller for exchange, refund etc....the tradeoff in the remote event they get the order wrong.

And even if they won't make it right in a timely manner, just flip the parts on ebay and you may even turn a profit.
I would say new bike parts on ebay are higher cost than similar parts purchased from Ribble even factoring in shipping.

In fact, I wonder how many purchase from Ribble and flip on US ebay and make a little money at it in spite of eBay's exorbitant selling fees?
