Roadie's probable recklessness leaves a woman brain dead

Woman brain dead after getting hit by cyclist in Central Park | New York Post

That is awful. Not sure if it's the same dude but this Jason Marshall is a serious rider:

Jason M. | Cyclist on Strava

bikepro 09-18-14 06:37 PM

If found guilty, he needs to spend some time in jail.

I doubt that's him. I've participated in a couple of races with that Jason Marshall, and seen him on training rides, but don't recall him having aero bars or a Jamis. Of course aero bars aren't permitted in races or on NYCC training rides....

Isnt that how the justice system works?

Jail time is inversely proportional to net wealth.

UnfilteredDregs 09-18-14 07:03 PM

The problem in Central Park is none of the rules are enforced. Pedestrians constantly jaywalk, ignore lights, walkers, joggers in the bike lanes, slow riders in the fast bike lane, riders cycling against the CCW traffic flow...Cyclists ignoring lights, when avoiding hazards coming over into the walking and driving lanes, etc.. There's been a focus on enforcing cycling rules by the NYPD but I think a class action suit is being filed against the city because the enforcement is selective...

Why? Cars routinely hit pedestrians without facing jail time.

I was riding in CP today and noticed this. Cops had blocked off a pretty large section after Tavern on the Green. Article doesn't mention what color the light was. I wonder who had the right of way because CP is notorious for people just doing whatever the want. Everyone thinks they have the right of way.

I've actually raced with the him, seems like a very nice guy.

Yup. they should just build pedestrian bridges over the drives...

Walking without a helmet? Darwin award.

He admitted to being in the wrong lane.

Is it illegal to ride a bike in a "car lane" in Central Park?

I hate those required bike lane laws. Some of the stupidest bike legislation around.

I don't live in New York City. Maybe those that live there and ride in Central Park can chime in.

LesterOfPuppets 09-18-14 07:29 PM

Looks like they do have a required bike lane law. There are exceptions for safety, turns, access, etc.

The law actually says "etc." Nice. I'd probably take that "car lane" in NYC much of the time.

WalksOn2Wheels 09-18-14 07:30 PM

Holy cow, that is one of the most perfect pieces of sensationalist yellow journalism I have ever had the chance to read. I mean, the cold facts probably point to the cyclist being at fault, but wow, the phrasing, the diction, everything they can possibly stack against the cyclist. They spin better than a track champion.

Well that depends on how you look at. In that area, there's a running lane, a bike lane and 2 car lanes. Cyclist, horse drawn carriages and bikes that carry people in the back (don't know what they're referred to) use the the bike and car lanes. No cars use it because they're not allowed in that area of the park unless you're cop, ambulance or park vehicle.

datlas 09-18-14 07:36 PM

I am thinking that Aerobars plus NYC is not a good mix. But hindsight is 20/20. I feel bad for all involved.

There are bike lane laws in NYC. There's a video on YouTube about a guy poking fun at it since bike lanes are also abused by everyone. Cyclist go the wrong way, pedestrians use to stop in while waiting for the light to change, cars use it to double park, etc. Law says, cyclist must always be in the bike lane.

LesterOfPuppets 09-18-14 07:41 PM

Best part of the article is the break/brake mistake.

“He couldn’t break because he was leaning down,” Longman said.

Velo Vol 09-18-14 07:42 PM

Get rid of bike lanes. Problem solved.

WhyFi 09-18-14 07:42 PM

Unless it's changed since I've moved, if there's a bike lane, you're supposed to be in it unless it's obstructed. In the parks, lane designation varied depending upon the time/day.

The law allows for some exceptions. There are exceptions for safety, turns, access, etc. "etc" is actually in the law, pretty much covers everything, right?
