How often or how many miles ?

Depends on the conditions I am riding in. Also are we talking road or off road. Basically when the chain begins to make the slightest noise I lube it. On my road bike it is a quick luging about every 100 miles. Every couple of times I clean it and then relive.

There are only two times I lubricate a chain: When it needs it and When I feel like it.

Really though, it's not so much about the time or the miles as it is about the conditions and the lubricant used. Wet sloppy or dry dusty conditions require more frequent cleaning and lubrication than relatively clean dry pavement and different lubricants (now there's a whole 'nuther can o worms) may require more or less frequent reapplication. I tend to use a dry lubricant (my current one is WD40 Dry Bike Chain Lubricant) for general road riding and dry off-road. When things get sloppy or in the winter I switch to a wet lube (Dupont Multi-purpose Synthetic with Teflon). The dry lubes I've used need more frequent application that some of the better wet lubes but that's a generalization and I'm sure there are exceptions. I clean and lube my chains when they are dirty, I have been riding in wet conditions or when they get dry and noisy (squeaky) or about once a week (about 100-150 miles for me) just because.

Depends on the conditions in which you're riding. Lately, I've just been applying lube before every or every other ride. Started using white lightning clean lube (wax), and prefer how much cleaner it is. Mostly used progold prolink in the past, but found it a bit messier than I liked. Great lube, but a personal preference, as I don't often ride in the rain.

Party pooper, riding in rain is half the fun.

I don't mind it as much when it is warm, but I hate it when it is cooler. I have 6 pairs of the same sock which are mostly white and always get dingy as hell when riding in the rain. They never look the same after a ride in the rain, no matter how many times they get washed.

i had been using finish line dry or prolink gold... switch to rocknroll red last night... we'll see how it goes.

on my hybrid i had been lubing every 200 miles or so.

with my new caad10, i waited 290 miles or so before cleaning & relubing it.

I just back pedal while holding rag around the chain to wipe it down. Then I back pedal and apply plenty of SAE 90 oil, and then I back pedal again with a clean rag to wipe off excess. Then I wipe down the chain rings and clean the cassette by edging a rag in between the sprockets.

I do this once every week to two weeks, but I also do it after a rain ride (after cleaning the whole bike with a quick spray and wipe down.)

I use SAE 90 mostly out of habit from my motorsickle daze.

Depends on where and how you ride. A good general purpose lube like Rock n Roll Gold will both clean your chain and lube it. Should last about 200-300 miles and takes just a minute or two to do. I do it when the chain starts making any chain noise. If it's squeaking or you hear a lot of chain noise, it's time. Also, getting the grit out or off is just as important as the lubing.

You'll generally need to do it sooner than later if it's wet.

If you don't want to lube much at all, then use Chain L, it will last about 1000 miles.
