Bike Storage

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is an excellent point. I was exceptionally fortunate and acquired a VERY nice steel frame bike (Mondonico) - https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...hare-info.html It is in amazing condition with one minor issue, surface rust on the bottom side of the top tube and bottom bracket. The bike was stored in the pool shed with pool chemicals, and I expect this the primary reason for any rust on this otherwise amazing bike.

Steel parts will rust in a not climate controlled garage. At least in a humid coastal environment. Not a big deal, but steel bolts, for example, will rust if the surface coating is scratched.

Not really a big deal in most instances. I do have a vintage steel track bike that is rusting through the chrome on the stem and handlebars. I used to try and keep that in a closet in the house to minimize that, until I got tired of moving it out of the guest bedroom closet when we had company.

Salt air, pool chemicals and fertilizers are more harmful than humidity changes.

I live in inland Florida and keep my bikes in the garage. They have held over the years with very high heat and humidity.

Our three bikes are kept in our dining room. While the room has dining furniture, it hasn't been used once in 9 years for its intended purpose. It's right next to the front door so it's a perfect storage location. Maybe someday I will clean out one of the garages and store the bIke's there.

When I had a house, in the garage. When I had a condo, in the bicycle room; only the people with bicycles in that room had keys to the room. I kept my pump there too. There were only about 10 bikes kept in that room and a couple of them were much nicer than ours, so they were more likely to be targets. Also, the security guard and cameras would have acted as something of a deterrent.

Now I am in a new apartment that does not yet have a bicycle room, so they are the den. My wife's bicycle will definitely go into the bicycle room, but I just bought a new, much more expensive bike, so I am thinking I may keep it where it is now, in the den. My wife will no doubt have other ideas.

A few people have their bicycles chained to the wall in their parking spots. I suppose that could be an alternative, but my spot is too close to the ventilation shaft with extraction fans, so I would be worried about them being covered with snow and rusting.

Some "negotiation" may be required with my wife to keep mine in the den. Besides, where else could I work on it?

Seems like most folks i know keep their steel bikes in garage or outside but carbons inside the house. I'm more concerned about rust.

As we know, the correct number of bikes is n+1 where n is ones current number of bikes so I would say an insufficient number of bikes present. The pin ball machines lead me to think basement.

Very little bare steel on any type bike is exposed. The frame is painted, right? I like to switch out my steel stem and seat post screws for stainless. Possibly others too.

That reminds of the signs you see in bars that say "Free Beer Tomorrow"!

Garage. It'd be a pain in the butt to haul it up the steps of the apartment after every single ride.

I've had 2 bikes that I had to store outside in coastal environments, and it wasn't healthy for them. The 2nd used to be locked to the support post in our car port with my wife's beach cruiser. One time I came home late at night and the beach cruiser was gone; shreds of cable lock were on the ground all around. They'd stolen a $150 cruiser and left behind a $1000 road bike. I didn't know whether to be relieved that they only took the cheap one, or pissed that there were such stupid bike thieves in the neighbourhood.

Bachelor life = Inside apartment
Live with Girlfriend = locked in secure building bike room

About to move in with my Girlfriend, building has a similar locked, bike room situation in basement , should be fine as neither of my bikes are all that valuable. I'm still going to use a lock as double security.
