Advise on 2013 Cervelo s5 ultegra 6700

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Advise on 2013 Cervelo s5 ultegra 6700

Hello all. I've been out of biking for several years and am looking to to jump back in. I'm a distance runner and am getting into biking for a second form of exercise and enjoyment, but also to do some tri's and shorter road races century and under. I live in Orange County, CA and have been testing out bikes for about a month now.

Because I'm starting over I need to keep bike price under $4500 that includes petals and shoes. One of my local shops has a 2013s5 ultegra 6700 and their selling it for $3400plus store credit. Ive tried lightspeed C1, Felt AR 4, Cervelo S2, 3 and 5, R3 ultegra di2 and more, but I'm liking the s5. I know it's the old 10 sp ultegra, but I do like it. My questions are 1) Is that a fair price considering the build, msrp $4300 and 2) will I hate myself for going with older ultegra 10sp vs newer models. I tested New s3 and thes5 back and forth today and I do prefer s5 and givin pricei its winner.

I'm 29 and haven't been riding since my early 20's. Back then I was a pretty aggressive city biker in SF and mountain biker past month of testing has really relit my fire. Any comments are welcomed.
Thanks Shane

You like it? Go for it.

It's an awesome bike. Heck, they are all awesome bikes. You would have to try pretty hard to find a poor bike in that price range.

Don't sweat the ten speed. It's more than enough and bits will be around for a looooong time.

Enjoy it and ride the wheels off it. OC has some great clubs, fast dudes and some awesome riding.

Cheers!

If you are going to keep the bike for a long time (>5 years), I think you need to think about getting the 11 speed.

Price is pretty good from what I see here.

For Cervelo, I think the new 2014 S3 with an 11-speed drivetrain is the sweet spot in the aero bike range, and R3 for regular road bike.

buying new, you really should go 11 speed

10 speed, if you find something deeply discounted but for your budget, you can find great 11 speed options that won't leave you stuck in the future

The 11sp Ultegra entire groupset is about $600 from Ribble, just FYI in case you want to think about swapping. The new 6800 brakes are a significant upgrade to the 6700.

You can always upgrade to the group to 11sp or di2 as mentioned. Just keep in mind that your rear wheel needs to have an 11sp compatible hub. I just upgraded my bike to 5800 for $440 from Ribble and sold my well used 5700 group on Craigslist for $250. You should be able to get good money for a new takeoff 6700 group. See if the shop will install an 11sp group for you for free if you buy the bike.
