What to look for in a used carbon bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What to look for in a used carbon bike

As I continue my search for my first road bike, I have pretty much settled on a Giant Defy 3 or 2 if I buy new. I'll be checking out the bike shop somewhat near me tomorrow to see the Specialized and Felt offerings. While cruising craigslist, I found a few used carbon bikes. But, I don't know what to look for or what to ask about when it comes to a used carbon bike.

I assume I should look for cracks or scratches that might indicate frame damage. But, what else do I look for? I see a 2012 Defy 1 Composite that seems to be a fair price. I figure the upgrade to full carbon (probably not a big deal) and Ultegra might be worth the couple hundred dollar difference.

Definitely check for possible cracks everywhere, and I'd look to see if the bike is clean and well cared for. Not much different from buying any type of used bike, carbon or not.

Buying used is a case of "buyer beware". Having said that, I've bought two carbon bikes used and have been very happy.

+1, perform the inspection for cracks slowly and carefully. If in doubt about anything you find, ask the owner if the two of you can take it to a bike shop.
