There have been past threads about listening to music while riding (I personally don't), I wasn't trying to wade into those waters.

Oh yeah. The right type of music can certainly be helpful, IMO. I find it useful to time high intensity intervals so that the last hard effort ends when the song ends so I kill myself until the song ends. It helps with the tedium and distracts from the discomfort so enables me to go harder than I might otherwise.

Hard driving blues rock my world on steep climbs. Commit 2 Groove and John Mayer's "Dont Need No Doctor", SRV (any and all), Hendrix etc etc etc. It helps me ignore the hollering legs.
And on the trainer when the snow is deep and temps WAY below zero....it reminds me of.....earbuds.

I would have to agree with the music piece. I have a nice big stereo in front of my trainer so that people don't hear me crying as I HIIT it hard.

Most of my interval training is on the MUP after work when there is only other cyclists present. I only listen to music while riding solo, never on a group ride. Anything to distract the discomfort during major efforts will help to get through the pain. It works for me.

I usually watch TV while on the trainer, and I grab a big gear and sprint during commericals. I might just try music next time. I'd have to come up with a playlist first though. I can see myself on the trainer when "A long and winding road" by the Beatles comes up on rotation and kills my speed mojo.

That read is almost worth it for the picture alone. That is a fit body.
The study results should not be news to anyone. Why do you think we have pep rallies and pep bands? Not to mention the original pep bands, the drum and fife! Use it on the trainer but don't be tempted to take it with you on the road.

I've tried using music while both running and cycling. I can't seem to do it. It upsets the natural rhythms I develop in my own head. I tried it skiing also, which seemed like it would work great...but again, it's more distracting than enhancing to the sport, so I don't. I do find I talk A LOT to myself when I ride and run...and my mom and dad used to comment that I actually sang while I skied when I was young...completely without realizing it.

Funk and Old School works for me. It's the driving bassline. Afro-beat and classic rock too.

I ride with earbuds, (yes i am aware of the implications). I don't blast music and have set playlists with similar bpm's, and find it very helpful in maintaining a cadence.
If a car is going to hit me, its going to hit me. I can still hear approaching traffic with earbuds, but I am less rattled by it as well. I ride in pretty congested areas and the sound of engines and buzzing mufflers is less than calming.

I ride with one in ear headphone in my right ear. I find that some type of talking versus music makes the miles go quicker. I usually listen to Howard Stern, but just started listening to audio books as well.

Can confirm, I've been using a lot of heavier electronica during intervals on the rollers and it definitely helps me go harder and punish myself more. I've redlined at 197bpm doing 30s intervals with music blasting, versus high 180s/low 190s without music. Track of choice atm:

I've been doing this for a while (on the trainer) and I agree with the results of the study. Would be fun (but pretty stupid) to try this on an actual TT.
I usually use Oingo Boingo, or equivalents. I need a really fast beat.
