Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No. Ketchup goes on steak and fries. Tomato sauce goes on meat loaf. At least pthat is what the professionals say.

Except among purists steak sauces are quite popular. They are featured in many cuisines, especially French. Some bottled like A1. Some eaten fresh and hot like Bearnaise and Marchand de Vin. But the simple ketchup is the equal of any of them. Different strokes for different folks.

I understand about steak sauces, but thanks. This ^ is incorrect.

A variety of preferences about things like this is only natural. I don't elevate steak to an exalted position or enjoy it only rarely. I also don't object to enjoying it with a rather common condiment. As in all things, YMMV.

This ^^^

This thread is crazy, growing like a 'shroom. I started reading it between work project when it had 3 pages, now up to 6 and I gave up. Pages are going up faster than I can read them.

My bottom line, padded bike shorts are underwear, designed to go against your skin. I treat my bike shorts like all other underwear, wear it once and wash it. I do ride without bike shorts from time to time (Levis & Jockeys) typically less than 10 miles. But in my college years I didn't have a car, I'd ride dozens of miles a day in jeans and underoos.

You can do whatever you like, but there is no good reason to wear the undies under your padded shorts.

I'm interested to hear the OP come back with feedback after the first commando ride. Admittedly I felt awkward the first time I went without my undies, but now it's the norm and undies would feel awkward.

Lastly, if you get rubbed raw from riding, thing one to address: remove the tighty whities.

Last steak I had was from a grass-fed steer raised by a local FFA kid. There's no way I'm putting ketchup on that. It's an insult.

That's what I meant about elevating steak to an exalted position (which it doesn't justify). I don't get it. It's just food. I have never heard of a steer being insulted. I can't say about the FFA kid. Depends upon how glad he was to get your money. I doubt he cares much what you do with the meat. Now if you mean that YOU are insulted, hmmm, I guess I can see that. Investing yourself with the imagined status of this steer is a fairly normal human emotional response, albeit rather ridiculous.

If you think it tastes better with ketchup on it, put ketchup on it. If you don't think it tastes better that way, don't do it. But don't make the mistake of thinking it matters in any way that is important except for the eating. Just like medium-rare vs. burnt black. It is just a matter of taste, and there is plenty of room in the tent for everyone's preference. I assure you it has nothing to do with insults.

It's just steak. It's just a cow. Who cares. It farts like any other cow. Hope the FFA kid finds better things to do than sniff cow farts.

God help me but this early winter is bloody dreadful, isn't it?

Wear whatever you want.

How you have bloody nipples running in a 5k I do not for the life of me understand.

If you think "simple ketchup is the equal of all of them" when it comes to great sauces, I think you are extrapolating in a pretty big zone based either on a lack of experience with good sauce, or the possession of extremely questionable taste. Your choice, but not one you can expect most people to share, except for William Randolph Hearst, as I recall (could be wrong here) he ate ketchup on steak consistently. I love me some ketchup, but for a steak it just has all the wrong flavors to my palate.

Winter. Damn it all.

For hot dogs, I like to "drag mine through the garden" (aka Chicago style - pickles, onions, tomato, peppers, celery salt and good mustard - no ketchup), but I also add crispy bacon. Got to have bacon. So good!

Underwear under cycling shorts? Never. Heck, I stopped wearing underwear off the bike when I was freshman in high school.

Fair enough regarding your palate, but you're wrong about the implications of liking ketchup on steak. First of all it is a very close relative of the so-called "steak sauces", sort of a simpler version containing tomatoes, vinegar, and sugar but not for example the raisin paste and orange puree of A-1. And they sell a bunch of that stuff. You can forget about the lack of experience thing, that just ain't the case. I have tried many bottled sauces and made many other fresh ones over the years. Actually I like them all, but ketchup (And we are talking exclusively about Heinz here. Others need not apply) is unsurpassed TO MY TASTE. As to whether that taste is defective, well that is just name calling, and it has no basis except self-puffery. I can accept you don't like it; why can't you accept that I do?

My take is that steak is such an important status symbol to people that it has to be protected from degradation. Like @zymphad says, "It's just a cow," (or steer for that matter). Why does it have to be protected from the big red boogie man?

And contributing to destruction of our planet. Methane from cows/steers is more potent than cars in the US. Cows also destroy the land. Pollute our waters, and river systems. Elsewhere on the planet, they are clearing forests to make room for cattle. I'm so happy for your grass fed beef, congrats.

Cows still fart whether they eat grass or corn. But more importantly, if not for steak, what would we eat our ketchup on?

Yup. Being high and mighty about farts is bit strange. One of my favorite foods is a Reuben, a tough crappy piece of beef that I braise in the oven for 5 hours. Pile on some swiss and sauerkraut, yummy.

Yeah, but it's not the farts per se that are the problem, it is the global warming effect of the methane that has everyone all upset. There is a vegan movement based on the global warming effect of cattle flatus. Good luck with that.
