I usually wear boxer briefs... poly-spandex blend for wicking purposes and quick drying. It doesn't cause any chaffing or any other issue. Sometimes I don't, it just depends on the ride. If I'm going on a long ride at a fast pace and not commuting, stopping at stores, etc. then I might just go bare-bum up against my shorts. I don't personally think it matters one way or another, although I'd never ever wear cotton.

I do not use ketchup at all. It isn't awful, there's just something better for every application.
