My trainer rolls a PVC pipe on my calves and quads, anyone do this ?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Think its called mashing.

Now that the weathers crap ive gone from 150 miles a week to 50.

My muscle fibers in my legs are super tight.

I feel better after he stretches me out but i don't know whether to shake his hand or punch him.

Is there a better way ?

It's referred to myofascial release -- google it and you'll discover it's excellent for improving recovery/mobility. I made my own (very effective) roller out of PVC. Really makes a difference when I'm doing two-a-days with weight lifting & cycling.

I have a foam roller and one that''s made from about 3" diameter pvc with a thin foam coating around it similar to this:

GRID Foam Roller

While the pvc hurts more than pure foam, the pain is worth it. No pain no gain! But definitely feel better after rolling on the pvc

I use the gear shaped TheraRoll. Got this when I had some hamstring and hip issues running a few years back. Takes a while to get the hang of it, but it's awesome.

I use a high density foam roller for my hamstrings and back (PVC Pipe slips on the floor too easy for me) and "The Stick" for my calves and quads. Best routine I ever started was doing this daily. It sucks at first, but my legs and feet have never felt better.

I just got one myself. Pretty good after a run/ride. The pros use 'em too.

I have always used a foam roller when I can, but I am thinking of moving to a PVC pipe to really break up tight muscle adhesion. My soft foam roller just doesn't cut it. Plus with a PVC tube, you can put lacrosse/baseballs, golf balls, and other stretch instruments inside and store them during transit. Or just fill it with socks and snacks when on the road and use your space wisely.

I've always been toying with the idea of buying one of those lumpy rollers (not a grid, but actual extrusions that help break up muscle adhesions better), but I'd rather just drop $10 on PVC then $40 on a roller.

Had a few sessions with a pro, she used a few different types of rollers. She suggested the DIY version, to try at home, using PVC pipe. Her version though, includes foam pipe insulation wrapped around the PVC and a layer of duct tape all around it. Foam/tape prevents the PVC from slipping on hard floors. Besides legs and feet, I use it on my back. Excellent results. I'm a convert.

I use my favorite empty beer bottle. Basically mash it into my quad and ITB. So much more effective than the foam roller. I can be sitting in my recliner, watching a movie and spend 15 minutes easily on each leg. Can feel very easily where the muscle is "bunched up/tight" and can focus on that area. Also have a spot that is sore when cycling, but can't get with the roller, as it is right above my kneecap on the outside portion. With the bottle I can really get into that one particular spot. Works great, give it a try.

This was funny. I foam roll all the time. My partner and I were on the last night of AIDS LifeCycle and he decide to do it for the first time. He was like "OW THIS HURTS!!!!" I started laughing. "Did the look on my face imply this was fun?"
