Matte clearcoat or high gloss clearcoat?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Matte clearcoat or high gloss clearcoat?

Matte or high gloss over UD carbon fiber? My custom frame will be clearcoated to allow the workmanship to show, but I can choose high gloss or matte finished.

Which would you go with?

If the main goal of the clearcoating is primarily to showcase the workmanship, then I'll like to think a high gloss clearcoat makes more sense. No?

I have a matte 3k frame and have found that most carbon components are usually gloss. So....you know.....if you want the finishes to match you'll have an easier time if your frame is gloss. Plus as Jed19 said, a high gloss clear will accentuate the carbon better.

I like Shiny things, high Gloss, plus that matte black has been overdone.

i've heard 3k/12k weaves are used as an outer layer only, primarily for aesthetic reasons. don't know if i'd want an entire frame in UD, gloss or matte. but i guess if that's the only option i'd go, ummmm... gloss.

A matte finish looks good most of the time, dirty or clean. High gloss finishes show every minor scratch, rub, sweat and dirt. If you are meticulous and like polishing and waxing your frame, you’re better off with a glossy finish. My last frame was a high gloss finish over naked carbon. Looked very sharp. My current frame's finish is called a "satin composite", which is between a matte and high gloss finish. I like this one as well. I'm not a real fan of the dull matte finish.

Nothing China about this frameset. All the tubes are made in Utah, and the frame will be constructed in Arizona.

My last bike was matte finish. It never showed fingerprints, smudges, or scratches. My new one is gloss, and it shows everything. I'd take the matte finish back in a second.

You can always order gloss and if you don't like it get out the wet n dry sandpaper, be matt in no time.

Do both, I've seen that before on a Specialized cx bike, it had a matte finish with the words in gloss. Converge from gloss to matte in some way.

You're wrong. Universal generalizations usually are.

Deda, Ritchey, many many more....

Anecdotal shouldn't mean "I'm guessing"....

I hate the matte look. Looks like canned spray paint from Lowes.

Sorry LA, but I must beg to differ. Either that or your Lowe's is carrying some pretty high end stuff.

On most colors besides black or gray, I'd agree in principle.

I'm talking about black. Makes the bike look like it was painted with black primer spray paint, as someone posted pictures of above. And then when someone removes all the decals, which seems to be in vogue at some level, you can't even tell what bike it is.
