I don't get GoPro
 

Instead of enjoying the experience, now I have to worry about "recording my experience".

I know, I know, for safely or if you are really producing content, sure. But my climbing up Alp D'huez, I don't think so.

I agree with the OP. Climbing Alpe d'Huez was very memorable, but I have very little interest in watching a handlebar's view of the climb.

If I still commuted regularly, I might think about wanting something to document things in case I got hit, but other than that, I don't think I'd be interested. As it is, I'm trying to force myself to take less photos of my kids because I find that keeping the camera between us means I don't play with them or interact with them as much as I'd like. I spend the time trying to compose good pictures. I've noticed it elsewhere that I wasn't experiencing life as much, but I only really started caring with the kids.

+1, though I'll leave the decision up to my film crew and editors. They might want to mix in a little footage from that perspective.

I've been to a few parties where the host insisted on showing the guests his exploits with the GoPro, cycling and other adventures. They are painful to watch because, to the non-participant, it looked like most of the time, nothing is really going on. But as a guest, you are kind of stuck.

That's completely different use of the GoPro... they are doing a production.

If you live a place with nice views/scenery, or bike in different places that you would like a pictures in, you can have the automatically camera snap pictures along the way so you don't have to stop, in addition to recording the ride in case something happens.

Then go back and spend some time looking at what the camera caught.

Works if you drive through new places as well. Just set the camera up in front of your mirror so it's not in your field of vision and let it do it's thing.

Not really... because I won't be wearing one myself anytime soon.

I don't have a camera on my bike. Heck, I don't even have a computer, cycling Luddite that I am. :-)

But I like to watch the ride videos posted here and on youtube, especially in the winter months when I can't ride myself.

I also feel good about this trend of more and more people having cameras on their phones, on their bikes and in their cars. There is less and less room for idiots to be idiots and get away with it. I think this is going to have a positive impact on how people behave in traffic in general and towards cyclists in particular.

It's the kind of thing that I could see putting on in the background and just carrying on with the party. Like a moving painting of the French countryside, and also a conversation starter if there's ever a lull. Actually making your guests sit down and watch it is way too "look at meeeeeee".

I agree with the idea of not documenting everything...the overload of photos and videos we have that will never watch is already off the charts, but I got a GoPro for an ad hoc life insurance policy.

I have been rear-ended once by a car, and luckily she stopped and my lawyer was able to get me a new bike and cover my medical bills, but next time I might not be so lucky. Too many close calls happen to make me think there won't be a next time.

I don't do anything with the videos, unless a friend wants me to post an excerpt of a cool descent on youtube. I just delete them after each ride and charge the camera back up for the next ride. Now I just need to get another for the back view.

@dalava, you don't get it, because there is nothing to get. It is a solution for a problem yet to be discovered. I use my eyes and brain, the original camera, to record views from the bike. As far as safety is concerned, that is just foolishness. It surely doesn't keep you safe. The one in a million chance of recording a dastardly deed, well I will just let it go. Having the photos won't make me heal any faster, and I am well insured. As for revenge on the perpetrator or a thirst for "justice", I just don't have time for all that.

+1. In the Clyde/Ahtena forum there used to be a woman who would post videos of her climbing hills. You typically saw nothing of interest and could here her panting the entire time. Pointless viewing.

I document everything.... I just pooped and will up load it soon.

One thing i've been told, years ago... never video you and your wife in the act. Its never looks as good as you think it is.

What is it about commuters wanting to record getting hit? Don't you have enough to worry about already without contemplating your next crash with a car. The fetish for revenge and/or justice is so unattractive. Just let it go.
