Post your worn out components/bike!

Since there are so many new bike threads, why not a thread dedicated to trashed/worn out components and bikes? :thumb:

On my Raliegh Revenio 2.0 I have gone through a pair of tires, a chain, saddle, drop bars, it also has 2148.8 miles on it in ten months.

Jakedatc 12-14-14 08:26 AM

somehow rode 8mi home on this before i noticed it was cracked. (hit pot hole and flatted then was fine with new tube)

Broke a fairly new cog a few months ago.

I broke a stem and a fork. The fork doesn't look too bad in the picture, but you can tell it's broken if you squeeze on it.

There's more, but those are the ones I have pictures of. I have an old Selle San Marco saddle I should take a picture of. I put many years and miles on that saddle and it shows.

Bend it back, sand smooth, good-to-go.

Yep. It isn't cracked... merely slightly separated where the rim connects. A little twisting, truing, and light-sanding and the wheel will be like new.

Broke the bottom clamp on my Campagnolo titanium seatpost.

Didn't figure out why I was so uncomfortable until after finishing the ride and noticing my saddle was not in a normal position

I got my money's worth out of my 1996 Campagnolo Chorus 8 speed levers upgraded to 9 cogs around 2000. After a few crashes riding on ice in winter, too many G-spring and carrier replacements to count, a new thumb spring or two, and new front spring I broke the right lever ratchet pawl / shift lever return spring with that assembly discontinued.

Still got $45 selling the levers for parts on ebay.

I broke the front clamp bolt on the Velo Orange part I bought as a replacement after just 3415 miles in 7 months.

This was especially ludicrous because

1. I only weighed 150 pounds when it broke and the 180 when I got it was far from excessive.

2. I actually torqued the clamp bolts to spec using my Stahlwille split-beam torque wrench used for just a few fasteners since being calibrated. +/- 4% on a factory calibration over the full-scale, although Transcat may have done better with +/- 1% achievable.

Had to finish the last three miles of my ride standing with saddle in one jersey pocket (it fell out nose first, but stayed when I put it back wide end on the bottom) and clamp parts in another.

Wore out my last genuine Campagnolo rear shift cable in just 2500 miles. Shifting to smaller cogs was getting sluggish, so I pulled the brake hood, freed the rear housing from its stop, and poked the end out of the shifter where I noted one strand unraveling. After getting it out and flexing I noticed a bunch were broken.

This seems to be a recurring problem with either Ultrashift levers (the housing now enters flat with the cable making a sharp 90 degree bend around a guide, not at an angle with much of the bending done in the cable housing beneath the bar tape) or 2010 vintage Campagnolo inner cables.

I run tight cassettes and shift like I have ADHD to maintain a metronomic cadence, although that still seems excessive at half the life I got with my old 8/9 speed levers.

A small sample. Leftovers from racing in the 1980s

Red RD. 8 years, 40k miles, and a gazillion shifts.

I probably got my money's worth.
