Well, that guy looks like a fruitcake. Fruity jersey, helmet pushed back on his head, helmet straps sticking out, front brake caliper is open, expensive comfort bike with a 2 foot tall headtube and he probably has a 15mph average, his pale calves are soft but still bigger than his thighs. He has no quad muscles at all. Newb alert. At least he doesn't have a potbelly, I'll give him that much :D

She has a point. Whenever I am driving and see a middle age cyclist in full kit, I always laugh out loud at him for how ridiculous the whole thing looks, until I realize I am a MAMIL too!

He should sit on the couch and watch football like regular guys!

My favorite thing about the article are the pics showing the contrast between his smiling face and her perplexed/disgusted face.

I'm not a greek god of fitness. I wear my lycra, and quite frankly, anyone that laughs needs a rectal cranial inversion, because the double standard is just stupid.

Consider the Yoga Pant craze. Consider that the women that look great in them aren't doing yoga to get there, they are working hard to obtain that figure, and yoga alone isn't going to get them there (with the genetically blessed excluded). And this article, while humorous just reinforces a basic principal. OMG, not perfect bodied men in tight clothes, I can see stuff I don't wanna see, but women in tight clothes is a fine no matter what.

I'm sorry, but Get the F over it. I am to the point where I will quite deliberately wear my lycra with the intent of terrifying the soccer mommies, because I am sick of listening to them carp on others without looking in the danged mirror, and this article is very much the same carp.

I've been a runner for a number of years and over at the running forum this topic (guys in lycra) gets discussed ad noseum as well. What's the big deal? Wear what you want. Wear what you're comfortable with.

I wear lycra. It's functional. It even makes you feel fast.

Read the article. He was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago. He is not sitting around moping. He is not making excuses. He is living his life to his fullest. Sure he has a lot to learn. Sure he looks like some middle aged man who recently had the revelation of bicycles. But give him credit, He is far, far from the couch potato we see so often.

At your next club ride, welcome him. And when he sees you mean it, you can gently point out the helmet and jersey faux pas. (And that brake caliper - when I am riding with tires that fit through with the brake set right, I do the same thing. Now it's a parking brake. 5 seconds or more for the thief to figure out when I run into a store for a snack. Makes leaving the bike leaning on a pole much more secure.

I regularly ride with my levers set halfway so brake adjusts mid-ride are easy. Folks who "know" are often pointing out I do not have them closed.

+1. And not only are his shorts too low, they almost appear as if they are not snug around his quad muscles because they are so underdeveloped. Look at the full length shot. What are those things on his feet? Are they suppose to resemble cycling shoes?

BTW...I am surprised that some weight weenie hasn't quipped about rim riding a 2000 pound bike.

North Carolina would be a long way for him to travel for a club ride.
