Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - Dec 20/21

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - Dec 20/21

Getting close to Christmas!! Are you cycling like mad these days in preparation for all the holiday eating? Tell us about all the cycling you're doing these days.

Friday -- through a "comedy of errors" I ended up walking a whole lot more than planned. Bad accident (rolled SUVs but no one hurt) on the usual route on the way to work shut down the road, my bus was re-routed, and dropped me some distance from where I needed to be ... and then the driver on the way home was off in dreamland and despite the fact that I rang the bell and walked to the front, I ended up a stop or two beyond where I usually get dropped off. Oh well, more walking is good.

Saturday -- today we did the rounds of the tip shops. Among other things, we walked away with a bicycle for me ... and a frame that may be Rowan's.

Then we cycled up the cycleway and back with our Bike Fridays ... and Rowan tested out pulling a trailer. 25.9 km

22C and sunny out there this afternoon.

Today I rode 47.7 miles from Palo Alto to foster city and down to mountain view then back to Palo Alto. The weather was cloudy with a little bit of sun and light winds. Also I weighted my bike with all my supplies, food, water and other stuff, almost 50 lbs of weight, it takes a lot of energy and training to pull that kind of weight around.

Today, we rode the La Bella Rani 211k brevet. This was our "Christmas Brevet" as it goes through Frost, Frosa, and crosses Christmas Creek. It was cool/cold and humid all day, but it never did rain on us and the wind was pretty minimal, so we made good time. We had 8 riders out, but we got strung out for much of the ride. Here's my tandem partner Sharon and I at the creek.

Edit: By the way, that ride put me over 12,000 miles for the year.

I jumped on my roadbike today for the first time in just over 3 years post back op. I chose the Ricardo for the small seat to bars drop and was comfortable all day. It was stinking hot but cooler at Mt Lofty and fun coming down again.

!30 quite hilly km tonight. Was going great until my chain snapped in the middle of nowhere at about the 80km mark. Took out the offending link, rejoined it and nursed it home. Had to repress it twice. Surprised how well it lasted. Bit gutted because I was making great time.

Sunday -- We drove out to Bruny Island, including a ferry ride over to the island of course, where Rowan spent a couple hours working and I spent a couple hours taking photos. Somehow ... I've no idea how ... I ended up with approx. 400 photos. No, don't worry, I'm not going to post them all here.

And then we went for a ride ... 34.11 km. A fairly quick dash so that we would make it back for the 5:30 pm ferry.

It was a nice day, slightly overcast but reached a high of about 26C.

I rode with several club members on Saturday. We left Gurley and headed for the Moontown airport, a grassy strip for small planes. The end of the airstrip is the road so you have to pay attention! The weather was nice; starting at 45F and climbing into the low 50s (7-12C).

Our ride leader obviously didn't get the memo regarding the hi-vis yellow jacket(neither did I).

Ultimate in Fredliness or hot new fashion statement? I'm in no hurry to get compression socks myself.

I'm the one in black. The lady third from the left is a very good mountain biker that races all over the country.

My new Arundel Duo saddle bag. Holds a tube, levers, hex wrenchs, patch kit and my car keys. No velcro seatpost strap to rub against my shorts.

40 miles, 15.2pmh average, 41mph max. I was surprised at the low avg. since we'd done some good hammering at times but we also did some waiting around, regrouping, turning around, etc.

It was a very nice day.

Yesterday (Saturday) was a 27 mile loop around my town just outside of Orlando. Started off leisurely cruising down to the main drag (bricks), took in the sights as I cruised along the avenue, then got back on the blacktop and started to ramp up the pace. Finished with three all out laps around the 4.5 mile bike trail outside of my apartment.

Today (Sunday) went 32 miles and it was definitely more of a training/workout ride than a leisure ride. Took the Cady Way trail up to the Cross Seminole Trail and rode on that before turning around and coming back the way I came. Got some mile splits that I'm really happy with and was able to take the bike up to over 30mph on some sections where its as flat as flat can be.

Its supposed to be rainy and gross down here in Florida the next two days, then Tuesday I fly back north for Christmas at my parents, so no more riding for me for about a week.

Last weekend was a bike riding bust due to mostly Christmas prep/family activities. However, Saturday morning I did my 35 miles around S. Tampa. It was a little chilly, but nice otherwise. Sunday the weather was perfect in the early morning so went for 40 miles to Picnic Is. and Davis Is. My legs and back were killing me. The weather is turning over the next couple of days. Sunday afternoon a storm moved in. I was going to try and squeeze a few rides on my days off around Christmas, but we'll have to see what the weather brings.

Oh...and a lot of wacky drivers this weekend. Out of state snow birds/tourist making abrupt lane changes, stopping in the middle of the road to look at addresses etc. I had to yell at one truck that was driving the wrong way down a one way street in downtown Tampa.

Friday at Shark Valley in Everglades National Park. This was my first trip out there, it's a easy 15 mile loop with an observation tower at the midpoint. The tower overlooks a waterhole with about 20 gators in the water and sunning themselves on land. As you you ride the loop you'll pass 20-30 gators just laying beside the trail, since it was a little cool (low 70's) they seemed like they weren't going to move so you could get close for some selfies. Two laps around made for a great recovery ride. If you're ever in South Florida you should plan on going out there, they rent bikes there as well.

Saturday- 68 mile group ride. Damp & grey, but never more than a drizzle. The new 'ass-saver' (plastic strip that you stick in the saddle) worked great. USB light- not so much (see other thread). Chose a kind of wacky route that doesn't get done much, but it included a new section of bike path which opens up a beautiful section of farm roads. Lots of turkeys & mushrooms.

Sunday- Up & over the mountain muddy fire roads. CX bike w/ race gears- faster than my son on his mtn bike over-all, but had to take it slow on the descent (the famous Repack rd.). At the bottom the trail fords the creek 4X, & it's running!

We did a walk in Louisiana similar to that a couple years ago ... with gaters here and there.

I've had the flu for almost 2 weeks now. Hardly worked out at all this past week. Got on the rollers for an hour twice on Saturday. Way better than nothing. Sunday we showed up for the usual group ride and found only 3 other bikes. One of the leaders had posted that it was going to be a "monsoon." So of course it didn't rain a drop. We had a wonderfully warm dry road ride, 50°-55° in late December! We were leading and not feeling that hot, so we only did 28 miles and 1400'. We did a couple of 5 minute hills in the pink zone though and that went well enough. Otherwise we kept it down to zone 2 or below VT1 or however one figures it.

Feeling better, so off to the gym to ride the StepMill today.

Today i rode 35.4 miles using the Guadalupe trail and san tomas trail. The weather was warm 57F with sunny and cloudy. I did this with my 50 lb mountain bike. I need to get some fenders soon for the upcoming rain storms. It was a great ride.

Tuesday -- good workout at the gym. 30 minutes brisk walk on the treadmill to warm up + a strenuous 50 min spinning class.

It's a chilly, rainy evening.

Oh dear, I've just realised I have broken all the roadie rules on Saturday... at least according to one other poster.

-> Small-wheeled bike (albeit with slick tyres)

-> Bullhorn bars and MTB shifters instead of drops and STIs.

-> Pulling a trailer!!

-> Riding on an MUP.

-> Riding in non-jersey kit, with over-shorts, and MTB shoes with half-platform pedals.

-> Non-comforming roadie sunglasses.

Oh well...
