Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Decently Priced Wheel Suggestions: Road Build.

Hi there,

So, I built up an Aventon Mataro. Hell of an experience and It's everything that I wanted out of a bike. Now, I've sold my road bike to get a car and am looking to build one back up again. I was thinking a Scattante XRL Team Road frame. Looking for some wheel suggestions. Nothing carbon, as I would use this bike for everything, not just racing. Not afraid to spend money, but >$600 is out of the question (maybe). Other than that, free reign. Anything helps, all!

Take care.

Usually works out better to buy compete. But if you like building, I'd grab a 5800 group and some mid-range wheels (Fulcrum Racing 5?) all from Ribble.

Check Craigslist daily, some great wheels at realistic prices come up often.

If you are up to it, build you own. For the $500 price you suggest you can get all the parts you need from Bike Hub Store or BDop Cycling AND the tools to do the job. Light hubs, Kinlin aluminum rims and Sapim spokes. Terrific stuff. As good a pair of aluminum wheels as you will ever own providing you build them right. If you already have wheel building tools, then we are talking about <$300. If you don't want to build them, Bike Hub Store will build them for you for $130 on top of the parts, say about $400 or less. Absolutely no reason to do anything else.

Shimano WH-6800s cost about $400 and are dependable and lightweight.

Well you know what they say, "One out of two ain't bad." Or was it, "Two out of three ain't bad." Oh well, you get my point.

Fyi-For the team xrl frame, wait a bit and see if there is a Performance deal for New Years. I built one up this time last year and was able to get that frame for around $380 with a code. It's been well worth it, I really like the fit and ride quality and is fun to ride. Another cheap frame that looks pretty decent and seems to have some good feedback online is:
Velocite Selene best alloy road bike frame
Has somewhat unusual geometry, so I went with the Scat.

For the wheels I went with ROL Race SLs, which have been great, but were somewhat pricey. If i wanted to do it cheaper I may have looked into getting something similarly specd from a builder, or shopped around on a deal for Vuelta Corsas, Fulcrums or Shimano 6800 wheelsets.

For $222.75 it's hard to beat these:

Vuelta Corsa Lite Road Wheelset - Modern Bike

I got a set last year and have been very pleased. 1578 g for the set and they were true and tensioned properly out of the box and have remained that way.

and for frames, I would keep an eye on ebay for a nice used frame. You can find a CAAD frame for less than the Scattante if your patient. And used frame will likely come with headset already installed which will save another $50 or so if you have to buy a headset and have it installed or buy tools. And used frames might get some other extras like stem, seat post etc thrown in

I've been working with Tom at GVH Bikes for my clyde wheels. Seems like some decent prices for decent gear.

good advice.

my kinlin xr-200's on novatec hubs, and sapim race spokes cost me about 250 to build and came in at less than 1500 gms. 28h.

i probably should have gone 20h front, 24h back. but i'm . BITD it was go 32 or go home.

I hate to spend money so I bought a set of these: Sun M19AII Tubular Road Cyclocross Bike Wheelset Fits Shimano SRAM 8 9 10S Black | eBay

and a set of Continental training tubs and a few tubes of glue and they are lighter and feel amazing compared to my fancier wheels. It did take a few sessions with spoke wrench to get the rear tensioned properly but they roll nice for cheap! Buy two sets and still make the budget, with tires even...

+1 on Vueltas. I bought a set of Vuelta Corsa Pros in 2013 and have 2 or 3 thousand miles on them. Solid inexpensive wheels that aren't boat anchors and spin for days.

After about 500 miles I am very happy with the wheels I bought from Yishun Bike. 1450 grams, $330 to my door. You need to be patient, they are not good with follow up, i.e. order confirmation and shipping notice, but they do respond to inquiries about your order. I received my wheels 30 days after my order.
