Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@LAJ is right, this computer does look interesting.

It can communicate with the Di2 and you can display Di2-related data, including battery charge, a schematic of what gears you're in, gear ratios, etc. Very useful for me since I can never remember what gear I'm in, I'm forever looking down to check. How newby is that? Haha and also forever *shocked* to find that I'm out of gears climbing up some gnarly hill.

Also GPS, ANT+, thermometer, barometric pressure and altimeter.

I kind of want this as long as it doesn't turn out to suck IRL.

Sad, but kind of nice too, no?

I need to tell Mr H that is if I die unexpectedly, the Magic Bike goes to Mt Boy Racer. He would: 1. Totally appreciate it and 2. Put the miles on it that it deserves.

RIP to your riding bro.

OMG, that bike is just too damn hot! (well, the red stripe tires kinda ruin it a little bit, but...)

It's not mine; I presume it's that guy selling that ellipse.
I was checking out the focus too when I noticed it had single pivots and 8/7 speed 7400 RD

I have spent a lot of hours riding side-by-side with that same model bike. A good friend has one and rides it often.

Hot!

But if it's not for sale why is it out on the floor? It should be hanging on the wall or from the ceiling or something. Minus those ill-conceived tires, of course. Some skins would be hawt on that.

It was just brought in. The mechanic who now owns it is trying to decide how he wants to rebuild it. The Campy parts are not the originals, of course. They are ca. 1992, not mid to late '80s and the right shifter needs to be rebuilt at a minimum. This thing is pristine except for some minor paint marring on the down tube where the fingers rub the frame when using the original downtube shifters. Anyway, I'm sure that new tires will be in the re-build.

The original owner was anal retentive about his toys. I can't imagine how many miles this thing has on it and is still in such immaculate condition. I remember when he bought it new.

all this talk about garmin...when did cycling become so complicated. I remember when I picked up the bike and just rode with gay abandon. Now I dress funny, I fiddle with my nads to get comfortable, I eat, I digest, I check tyres, I check my bag, I check my pockets, I worry about food and drink, I put on my funny shoes, I fiddle with computer (well that has ended now), etc etc.

Such a palava!

The interesting thing is that most people who have Stages Power Meters run then with Edge 500s or 510s. I am the only one I know of who has had problems to this extent. I think I am majorly taxing the capabilities of these units- I ride a lot of miles with 3 connected devices and sometimes am on the bike for freakishly long periods of time in the presence of a lot of other bikes transmitting various signals. Quite honestly, my impression is that the Edge 510 is barely capable of doing what its advertised to do- connect to multiple ANT+ devices, connect with Bluetooth devices, and do this flawlessly for the duration of your ride. Then I ask it to do all of those things (well not connect to a BT device but just function in the presence of the BT signal from the Stages) for an extended period of time and it just can't. I think the basic software/technology is shaky. Every few weeks Garmin seems to be releasing a new software patch (theres a new one now, just updated my software 3 weeks ago maybe, you can never go too long with Garmin saying you have the latest version of the software). Not a fundamentally stable system IMO.

Also its hard for me to know when someone says "my XYZ brand unit works just fine," if XYZ unit will work just fine for me. The unfortunate reality is that I'm probably going to only find this out by ponying up and buying something else. Because of this, I guess I should probably try to keep cost to a minimum. But that Pioneer is tempting.

As I see it here is the deal. If riding is by itself the object, then an old time bike speedometer/odometer with just a few functions will be fine. Or heck, no computer at all. But if riding is a means to accomplishing a stretch goal, then there is no end to the electronic assistance that cyclists will seek out to achieve that goal and to verify that it has been achieved. As the electronic aids that are available have become more complex, they have been adopted by the goal oriented, and that complexity has been incorporated into cycling.

I have no goal, so I have no need for measuring my performance. I just like to ride and even that only in a very narrow temperature band. I use a $6 wireless computer. But other folks are really concerned about reaching a goal, and they need a way to know that they have.

Heathpack, she needs to know. What? Everything.

Interestingly enough, the "wind in the hair" cyclists are forever bemoaning the complexity of the type of cycling that I do. Yet who is out there actually riding day after day, week after week? Me, data girl. I just like to ride my bikes. I just like data. Data does not detract for someone like me, it vastly enhances the experience.

To each his/her own of course. But it just strikes me as funny when the wind-in-the-hairs imply my data devices take the joy out of cycling. Because I doubt there is anyone out there who likes to ride more than I do.

Hey HP, Has anyone mentioned Mio as yet another alternative to Garmin?

Cyclo 3.0" WIFI - Mio

I purchased their cheapest model, the 105, for something like $50 from overseas and have been pretty happy with it. It's got a frustrating user interface and they require their own clunky software to extract initial readings - but after that you can link it to Strava. So that's a negative. But the device itself works pretty well and the top model (505) has all the bells and whistles: Barometric altitude, Di2 support, BT, ANT, etc etc.

I can't speak for others, but let me assure you that I had no intention of denigrating your cycling. Clearly you add several layers of pleasure of types that are desired by you onto the basic riding experience that I enjoy. I just meant to point out that without those additional purposes for the riding, the electronic assistance is not required. As for the electronics taking the joy out of riding, well that shouldn't be the case. Your current dilemma is, however, and unfortunate example of how it can happen. Good luck in getting it resolved quickly and cheaply. I wonder if you have considered any Wahoo products and whether they might help you out.
